Michael Owen, our prodigal son

Posted by

Michael Owen was just signed by Real Madrid for £8 million,  he wanted Champions League glory and did not believe that Liverpool under new manager Rafa Benitez could win the cup.

Like many Liverpool supporters I was gutted when I heard the news, I had been a big fan of Owen from the first game he had ever played in the Red shirt. His F.A. Cup final performance of 2001 will never be forgotten neither will his goal scoring tally of 158.

Rafa invested the 8 million wisely, he brought in Xabi Alonso & Luis Garcia and thanks to Michael Owen’s departure Liverpool would make history as both Xabi & Luis were instrumental in bringing the Champions Cup home for the 5th time in May of 2005. I am sure that Michael was kicking himself when he saw former Academy mates Steven Gerrard & Jamie Carragher lifting the cup on that night in Istanbul.

Michael’s Spanish adventure did not last very long and in the Summer of 2005 he returned to the Premiership and joined Newcastle for £16 million. He had almost returned to Liverpool until Newcastle joined the chase and the price went up. Liverpool of course did not want to pay double the money they had sold him just 12 months earlier.

So Michael went to Newcastle but he has been plagued by injuries and only made 71 appearances in 4 years at St. James’ Park. In the 2008/09 season Newcastle were relegated and Owen is currently without a contract so he destined to move.

Now the rumours surrounding Owen have him signing with local rival Everton, Aston Villa, Hull or even possibly back to Liverpool on a pay-per-play basis.

I would welcome Owen back to Liverpool however many Liverpool fans still have not forgiven him for walking away to find a “bigger club”.  I tend to remember the great goals he scored for our club and especially that F.A. Cup victory over Arsenal.

Y.N.W.A. and good luck Michael.

Since I wrote the article above Owen has joined Manure so unfortunately he has lost my support too. Crossing over to the dark side is inexcusable.

  1. I agree with rob on that he has had his day even on a pay as you play deal what will it help if he don’t play at all and also for Owen’s own sake i don’t think it will help him to be at Liverpool cos I’m not sure even when he is fit how much he will get to play

I was angry and sad when he left i thought it was a bad move but was also thinking at least it was not another Perm team

but i don’t see any reason for me or any other Liverpool fan to be angry any more as i think he has suffered enough as Antoine Zammit has just pointed out seeing other he played with just a year earlier winning and lifting the CHL and then having a bad time in Spain and then all the injury’s he has had then to cap it all off to get regulated and now no club

We should be thanking him if any thing would we have won it with out Xabi Alonso & Luis Garcia??? it could have been a different story

Wish you luck Owen hope you find a club in the Prem and for me i think Hull would be the best move

  2. I agree with the comments made by Paul and Duckbox. I don’t feel angry with Michael any more and think that he has more than just time to reflect on what must now seem a poor decision in the past. I wish him well. I loved him when he played for us but don’t think that we are the club for him now.

  3. Thanks Antoine Zammit

actually I still like to see MO again in liverpool.
MO will be a great partner with torres and lets hope to see him again with his friends.

  4. Can’t forgive Michael Owen. Two days before he joined Real Madid he was making public announcements that he was staying at Liverpool.I purcased the home and away shirt with his name and number on the back for my son. What a waste of money.
However his lack of loyalty backfired on him.Was at the Newcastle match on 26 December 2005 when the Kop chanted “You should have joined a big Club”

  5. Owen palyed the football of his life at Liverpool and those are the best memories he has in the whole of his soccer carrier. He has never played better from then on and his performance has only worsened. Look at what happened to Fowler. Let Owen keep his legend and go play for smaller teams where the little that is left in him can be appreciated. What Liverpool has is a team of strenght skill and splendor and Micheal has non of that now.

I did always enjoy him play for the Reds and he was electrifying.
