When Blackpool became Liverpool (remembering Dear Dad)

Posted by

It is funny but sometimes you just get flashbacks from childhood out of the blue.

As I said earlier I do not remember exactly how I became a Liverpool fan however something clicked this morning. Today is the 13th anniversary of my dad’s passing, and as I was going over childhood memories I remembered that dad was a Blackpool fan.

Dad loved football and out of my brothers and sister I was the only one who inherited the passion, his favourite player was Stanley Matthews and that would have explained why he supported Blackpool.

In the mid to late 70s & 80s Blackpool where always somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd division. As a young kid I would have looked at the standings in the paper which of course only published the 1st division. Maybe I could not find Blackpool and saw Liverpool and told myself, hey close enough :-)

Right after I finished typing this article I saw a headline that read “Blackpool to face Liverpool reserves today”, chills ran down my spine. Is dad sending a message?

  1. My thoughts are with you on this anniversary.

I am from Blackpool and live approx 5 mins walk from the ground – let me tell you Antoine you made the right decision! No disrespect to your father but to use the words of the great man “if they were playing at the bottom of my garden I would draw the curtains” lol.

  2. Love the post, Antoine. 13 years my dad’s been gone too. Always on my mind. I swear he does send messages, too.
