When I was a teenager this would have been my biggest nightmare, two Italian Internationals playing for my beloved Liverpool.
Growing up in Malta you either followed Italian or English football and the rivalry between both camps was tremendous, you either supported an English club (and the England national team) or an Italian club (and the Azzurri). Being a Liverpool supporter of course put me in the English camp, if an English club (including Manure) would play against an Italian club anyone in the English camp would be compelled to support the English club.
I hated Italian football with a passion (even though my grandma was Italian) I just could not stand watching any kind of Italian football, Serie A, Serie B, Internationals, No Grazie. Of course everything came to a head in 1982 when Italy won the world cup, I cried for a whole week after than event and was gutted beyond belief. So then you can imagine my joy in 1984 when Liverpool beat Roma in the Champions Cup final and this still is my favourite L.F.C. moment and my most cherished memory.
Things have changed now (for me personally anyways) club now comes above country more than ever. I still have a soft spot for England but only because of Gerrard & now Johnson playing I am totally behind any Liverpool player that plays for whatever country it is.
So where does this leave Aquilani?
I am nervous as 99% of all Liverpool supporter, we have not had good luck with Dossena and Aquilani comes to Liverpool with a history of injuries. We even bought him injured, he can not play for 8 weeks.
But hey come October he is going to be wearing a Red shirt and I will be 100% behind him. I really hope he succeeds, I am putting my faith in Rafa’s judgment.
So what about Italy? Well if Aquilani or Dossena are playing then I am going to yell Forza Italia unless of course they play England, Spain or The Netherlands. :-)
