Liverpool and Juventus…..copycat season!

There is another European great that is suffering and failing to fulfill the pre-season promise like our Reds. Juventus started off with an all conquering promise which has withered away helplessly and there seems to be no light at the end of their tunnel.

Last night, Juve lost again at home to a 92nd minute goal by ex-Red John Arne Riise who had also managed to have Juve shotstopper Buffon sent-off 10 minutes earlier in one of this goal bound forays.

The bianconeri are now 5th in the table with a game in hand, yet in tomorrows fixtures, Palermo have a chance to overstake them while Fiorentina and Cagliari can catch up with them at 30 points if they register victories in their respective matches (Palermo and Fiorentina having a direct encounter).

Juve have lost 8 matches out of 21, and for manager Ciro Ferrara, this might have been the last game in charge which would make him the 12th manager to be sacked by the impatient Italian club owners, which contrary to the culture of the PL, are the real prima donnas of Italian football, some having as much as three managers on their payroll.

Like our Reds, Juve did not manage to go through the group stage of the CL and now find themselves in a real battle to manage at least 4th spot to compete with Europe’s elite in next year’s competition.

Having brought in players like brazilians Filipe Melo and Diego, fullback and Italian international Fabio Grosso, plus resigning Fabio Cannavaro back from Real Madrid, the Turin club was all set to make a bid for the Scudetto and a strong CL campaign after a strong finish to last season.

The start of their season was promising, dicing with Inter for top spot and biting at their heels game after game, but somehow they lost their way, and now find themselves in this unlikely predicament.

Perhaps this destiny was similar to what our Reds have gone through this season. We all had great expectations and the primary target was the Premier League title, which we have never won. We also had high hopes for an excellent campaign in the CL which had become traditional under Rafa’s reign.

We now find ourselves out of the Champions League, out of the FA and Carling Cups. We are still in the Europa Cup because our third place finish in the CL group stage gives us this reprieve.

I expect Juve to do exactly the same thing that the Reds will do. They will find their path, they will find a belief in their capabilities, and they will start to re-climb the table.

Their faith will be very similar to ours. There are new contenders for a CL spot in Italy too, it’s not as easy as it used to be, but Clubs with the tradition, heritage and support like Liverpool and Juventus should somehow prevail.

  1. I watched the game and when Riise scored I said “damn just like Liverpool” :(, they have lost games in the last minutes, their form has been poor some games, they’ve had bad luck with injuries too.
I totally agree with you, it won’t be easy for the reds or Juve but i think they’ll go through it (they have to). Everyone have bad runs, and Top clubs have the capabilities to get back on track

  2. Hi, I agree. Unfortunately giving a red or even yellow for theatrics will be very hard to enforce. There are some flagrant cases obvious to the viewer at home but it is hard for the referee to tell if a tumble is genuine or not without the benefit of instant replay. Imagine the double injury of taking a genuine tumble and then being awarded a red card for your pain. I think this is why most referees are loathe to apply even the currently prescribed yellow card, except they directly witness a violation, something which isn’t always possible with all the activity on the field.
