Liverpool 1 – Unirea 0

If I am not mistaken this means that we won so why the hell is anyone upset?

I am thrilled with the win, a victory is a victory and I will take it any day.

Yes we should have scored more but the Romanians played with 11 men in the box and you have to give them credit for defending well.  We had lots of shots on target but it seemed that the ball would not go in. The shots were either saved by their keeper or deflected by one of the defenders.

They came to Anfield with the hope of keeping a clean-sheet and maybe sneak a quick counter attack and snatch an away goal. Well they failed because David N’Gog scored in the 81st minute to give us a deserved victory. Credit to Rafa for the tactical change in the 2nd half by bringing on Ryan Babel & Danny Pacheco who were both instrumental in the winning goal.

In Romania it will be a different game, they will have to open up more and we should have a stronger squad and I believe will have at least one of the injured trio back  (Johnson, Torres & Benayoun) if not all.

  1. Well said. Winning at home and not conceding any away goals is a HUGE result. Think about it: they have to score at least 1 goal, otherwise they’re finished. If they open up their play they give us more chances to score our away goal, and that’s very dangerous for them. If we score 1, they now have to score 3 to eliminate us. Very bad. Or they can go all defensive again, try to keep a clean sheet and snatch a goal on a counter attack, dragging the game to ET and penalties. That’s a very reasonable option, in my opinion. The offensive approach is very risky, considering the fact that we have a superior team and are more likely to score. Anyway, we got some serious advantage over them.

  2. I hope I wasn’t the only Red who screamed his lungs out when we scored. Every goal is a step nearer to the Uefa Cup/ Europa League, whatever you want to call it. Every goal is a step in the right direction. YNWA

  3. It is a good result, but there were to many stupid mistakes … that’s why I cannot enjoy the victory as I’d like to. But next week we’ll show the world what we can. YNWA

  4. the goal was typical of the type of players Lucas, N’Gog and Insua are. NGog was generally ineffective for most of the match and stuck with it and got the goal. Its how their careers have gone at Liverpool so far. I thought Lucas did well when he came on. Insua needed a deserved rest.

Delighted with the result!! When Utd play shite and win: “If a team playing bad can grind out a result, it shows the quality and signs of a title-winning team’. When Liverpool play shite and win : “Liverpool scraped out the draw. They got lucky”.

Not much bias around these days is there?

  5. Yes, a win is indeed a win. That said I thought we were awful last night and I would say that it was by far the most depressing match I have watched. Yes, I’m pleased that we won but come on, the opposition hadn’t played a competitive match for 2+ months – we should have taken them apart. Yes, they played with men behind the ball (this was surely expected?) but surely we have the class to move through the gears and put them to the sword – I’m sure Man City are shaking in their boots at the prospect of playing us on Sunday – was last night not an opportunity to send a message to Man City and others that LFC mean business and are serious about fourth place and beyond?

To be honest I would rather go out of the Europa League if it meant a guaranteed fourth place.

  6. Jay, dont worry. You weren’t the only red jumping up and shouting. I was there with you!! It was a fine win. Albeit a bit scrappy but they never threatened us properly and reina was never tested. gives us a great position going out to romania as they have to score 2 with no reply to go through. YNWA

  7. Was a dull match last night. If it had been man u (scum) or chelsea they would have put 5 past them but as we lack goal scorers we were left pinging the ball around 35 yards from the net without actually doing anything with it.

Added to that the fact that Gerrard will be tired for sunday and im sure ngog and Masca will as well it was a poor night.

For goodness sake they hadnt played a competitive match in 2 months and were only promoted to their top division 4 seasons ago!

Dont know why people are saying its a good win when clearly it isnt. If we had won even 3 nil then at least he could have rested some of our better players during the away leg but now it will need to be a full strength team.

  8. Exaclty matye, dunno what Amanda’s going on about! Seems too many people are reading the medias spin on the game. Yes we should have scored more, and if Torres had the chances N’Gog had I’m sure we would have walked away with at least 3 goals.

But the win was well deserved, ignore what the papers say, forget not buying the sun, don’t buy any paper it’s only going to annoy you. Always a negative spin about how Liverpool are doing. Yes we are underacheiving for a club with our history. But thats all it is history, let get behind the club to make it a great future!

  9. Hi, 1-0 is dangerous score and next week will be an interesting game. I like Liverpool, but I love Romania. Good luck next week. Bucharest waits you. Good luck against M.City
