Fantastic win tonight against Benfica in the Quarter Finals of the Europa League, really was a great performance. So we get Athletico in the semi finals in a couple of weeks…but let me ask this. Would bringing the Europa League trophy make up for the season we’ve had? In my opinion….yes.
Think about it…we’ve not won anything since the FA Cup in 2006, 4 long years. That is not the Liverpool way. A trophy this year would be fantastic, yeah it may be the Champions League little brother, but we have done the CL 5 years ago. Now I’m not saying it wouldn’t be great to win that again, course it would. The Europa League isn’t as ‘cheap’ as people think. Benfica, Valencia, Athletico, Juventus. All world class teams have been in the competition this year, and I don’t hear their fans saying its cheap.
4th place in the Premier League seems like it may be beyond us now, but it is NOT impossible. Improbable, yes. Impossible, no. I mean the run in for us and the other teams are lot different.
Liverpool: Fulham (H), West Ham (H), Burnley (A), Chelsea (H), Hull City (A)
Man City: Birmingham (H) , Man United (H), Arsenal (A), Aston Villa (H), Spurs (H), West Ham (A)
Spurs: Arsenal (H), Chelsea (H), Man United (A), Bolton (H), Man City (A), Burnley (H)
Villa: Everton (H), Portsmouth (A), Hull City (A), Birmingham (H), Man City (A), Blackburn (H)
For me, Liverpool have the easiest run in (on paper) from here on in, the only possible stumbling block being Chelsea who are fighting for the title. So say for example we beat the rest, and lose against Chelsea. We gain 12 points.
City, I can see United and Arsenal being losses, with a draw with Spurs and Villa, winning the rest. Gives them 8 points.
Spurs, losing to Arsenal, Chelsea and United, draw with City giving them 7 points.
Villa, draw with Everton, Birmingham and City, winning the rest, gives them 12 points.
So if that is correct, the table finishes like this…
4th: Liverpool 70 points
5th: Man City 67 points
6th: Villa 66 points
7th: Spurs 65 points
So IF that plays out like I’ve predicted, (fat chance) we can get 4th and the Europa Leage…succesful season? You decide

I couldn’t agree more with you, Martin. This could be a good season if evereything happens the way you predict it. As Liverpool fans, we are used to be on top more often. This time will pass by end we’ll get back to be the glorious team we have been.

Interesting points regarding the 4th place scenario Martin…it really could go anyway, But in regards to the Europa league i think its a very interesting point, which can be looked at two ways.
Not qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages and finishing third means entry into the Europa League, and this is were it gets intersting. If Liverpool were to get knocked out of the Europa league at the first stage it would have been disaster, and ofcourse an embarrasement…However, if they go on to win the cup, it turns into a huge success! So its a tricky one were we will never be able to come to a conclusion…But now in the semi’s, Liverpool are definatly in it to win it!!!

We will be on the same level of fatigue as Fulham who have played away to Wolfsburg and passed to the semis like us on merit.
I do not think we will get to 70 points, but perhaps even 68 could be enough. Guess we just have to wait and see.
You know what could save our season? That we clinch 4th spot, win Europa and ManUre not winning the title. That would be bliss ;)
Really? You will take this as a sucessful season, more people seemed concerned with united not winning the title, to be honest I’m not even going to attempt to compare seasons with them. This has been an appauling season and yes silverware would be a great way to close the book on this year, but no way shape or form make up for what’s happened this year.
I am not sure about my calculation. When Man City win their game in hand they will be 7 points above us. If we get 12points and Man City get 8 points for the remaining games. The difference will be reduced to 3 points. Therefore if we want fourth spot they should get 4 points and not 8.
