Red’s World Cup Daily Round Up 23/06/2010

What a match that was! Like Capello said after it: “now I recognise my team again”. And so it was. The Three Lions found their team spirit as they had to win against Slovenia and our Stevie G. and Glen Johnson played a big role as England reached the last 16 of the World Cup.

And I even know why England won and why they’ll keep on winning:

“It’s no wonder the Three Lions pulled through yesterday – it’s all down to the curse of ITV that they’ve been struggling so far. Curiously, since 1982 the Three Lions have won 62% of their World Cup games shown on the BBC – and just 30% of those on the other side. The relaxed, jocular approach of Adrian Chiles clearly wasn’t working for Fabio’s men and the knowledge that they were playing shortly after Cash In The Attic obviously spurred them on. In even better news, the BBC will be covering both the last 16 game and the quarters, so England now look safe until the semi-finals. Well worth the licence fee…”  ;-)))))

But that’s still a long way to go so let’s go back to yesterday’s result …

Slovenia – England 0:1

The Reds pair played the full 90 minutes. Despite pre-match rumours speculating that Gerrard would be deployed in a central role, Capello kept his captain on the left-side of midfield. Wearing the all-red strip England kicked off and with Gerrard spraying the ball around nicely, they started in a very positive manner. And the team in Red dominated the game throughout, with few very good scoring chances.

It could have been even 2:0 or 3:0, but the luck wasn’t that generous. Johnson was booked after 47 minutes in controversial circumstances. His superb run down the right ended up with him being body checked. With everyone expecting a free-kick to be given just outside the box, the referee issued a yellow card to Liverpool’s No.2.

Slovenia came so close to an equaliser after 67 minutes but a heroic defending from Johnson and John Terry saved Capello’s troops.

England will now face Germany on Sunday afternoon.

Bring on the Germans! We’re there to win it!
