In Roy We Trust

Roy Hodgson has been named the 18th manager of Liverpool F.C. today, many Reds like me probably have mixed emotions about the whole thing.

I personally did not agree with this appointment and felt that Kenny Dalglish would have been a better choice, however now that Roy is our gaffer and we must fully support him. Hodgson has a mammoth task as he takes over the reins at Liverpool, his first role will be to prevent our world class players such as Stevie and Nando from leaving.  He will however have to sell some players to raise money for transfers with Yossi Benayoun looking likely to be the first player to exit.

It has also been announced that the new Gaffer has been given a three year contract which does raise some questions when you consider that L.F.C. should have new owners soon. Do Hicks and Gillett intend to stay for another three years or are the potential new owners in the loop on this? To add to the confusion Broughton said that there were no bids yet, so what is going on?

The other big question everyone is asking is  “who will be Roy’s first signing?”.  Brede Hangeland is the first player to be linked, not sure if Fulham will allow their former gaffer to raid their bootroom. I know that Roy likes to scout on this side of the pond so I will not be surprised to see an American player or two coming over to Anfield.

Rafa left a pretty decent starting XI which can challenge for the title as long as we do not have another season plagued with injuries. This should give Roy Hodgson an opportunity to become the first English manager to win an E.P.L. title.

Y.N.W.A. Roy,

Welcome to Anfield

  1. Widely reported as part of the Fulham severence deal that no Fulham players can be approached so don’t expect to see any of his former colleagues.

  2. I hope all of the supporters who have expressed their opinion on who should have taken over and Roy wasn’t their preference now get fully behind the manager of our football team. He did himself an awful lot of good at the press conference today and he gets my total support. To say he is a patsy is rather insulting to him – he knows the situation and knows he won’t have a sackful of money. His strengths are getting the best out of players that he works with (according to him and ex players) so lets see what he does with the crop of players he has. How many of us have said that we have players who underperform and as soon as they are let go they turn into world beaters. I truly believed and supported Rafa but I got tired (and embarassed) of hearing ‘excuses’ – more money. Players in turn were in the ‘shadow of the leader’ and also be-moaning the financial siutation. Yes we have been led a merry dance by our American owners and there is signifcant scepticism about Purslow and Broughton. Broughton will only oversee the sale and will be gone as soon as this goes through. He isn’t a muppet – he knows he isn’t like or trusted (due to Chelsea links) but would you raher he oversaw the deal or the yanks? As for Purslow – only time will tell. I am sure there are many who read this who criticsed Parry but if you look at what Purslow has done (Standard Chartered – best ever sponsorship – asian markets etc) and that is what he was brought into do. Anyway the fact that Roy has met SG and JC today are positive signs and I’m hoping some stability and football only headlines return about Liverpool. Let’s watch this space…

  3. I think they gave him a three year contract because he is a good, experienced manager who won’t add problems to the club and will prove his doubters wrong so there wouldn’t be need for a new owner to bring in a new manager. You probably agree with me that we are not a club where Jose would fit in (or any other prima donna manager). Simply not the Liverpool way. Therefore I am happy with this appointment.

Broughton explained why there are no bids yet and it was perfectly reasonable to me. They have probably sent brochures advertising the club to possible buyers. Thought that Broughton made quite a few things very clear in his interview today so the doom-mongers will be disappointed and in denial. I also can’t see why people moan about him being a Chelsea supporter. He is with us for a limited period of time and on a professional basis. He said today that it would harm his reputation if he did silly things and that is what I thought of him before. Don’t know in what kind of business the doubters and moaners work, but the way I know professionalism people are obliged to their employer and business, no matter where their heart is. Otherwise they leave or don’t take the job in the first place.

New players, well, do we need Brede? I think not. Kyrgiakos proved (to me) that he is an able player and Ayala actually impressed me in all but his first game. Kenny has watched all matches so here’s hoping that he tells Roy that first of all we need a left-back. What do you think?

  4. Amen. Only reason not go get behind him is if you’re wishing the worst for the club.

No potential investor will want to buy a club in downfall… we must win to be sold.

  5. From day 1 to day 2 and we are already living in the critical oblivion. “We must fully support him…” As a compromised minor manager? As an obvious agent for Hicks-Gillett? No, every friend of the club has the right to refuse. You are not “Roy” with me, Mr. Hodgson. You are not welcome.

  6. It’s a controversial view but why should we prevent Gerrard from leaving? His attitude for a skipper last season was shocking! I hope we get as much money for the 30 year old as possible. Towards the end of last season he ran about as much as my gran and she passed away some time ago. When things are going well he is happy, but when things aren’t going well he is a dangerous morale sapping sulky child. Time to go.

  7. I too had mixed feelings when he(Roy) was first mentioned as a possible successor to Rafa, but I have warmed to the idea and the more you look at the situation at anfield, the more it seems to me that he is the right man for the job.
We need his experience and he will not carry the weight of expectation that would burden a bigger name manager.

As for signings and in particular Hangeland, I dont think we need another centre half yet as we are strong in that position, unless Skrtel is on the way out of anfield. Im not sure the U.S.A. has players that we need at the moment (winger/striker), I havent seen anyone in the national side anyway. Hopefully if Masch is sold for 30-35 million and we can keep Gerrard and Torres and the funds from transfers are given to new transferrs then we would be able to sign a top class striker and winger, then who knows???

  8. Roy of the Reds! Well i wasn’t a fan of the appointment initially. But the Red of Liverpool is running through my veins. I have warmed to the idea. I am going to give him the support and respect any Liverpool Gaffer deserves. I would love for him to prove all his doubters wrong (including myself but will give him all the chances in the world to prove otherwise). Welcome Roy of the Reds!(that sounds good). YNWA!

  9. Let’s support Roy for now he is our new club manager take it Or leave it. I believe that Roy will do us proud.YNWA
