It didn’t look good at all after the first half of today’s quarterfinals match in South Africa. The Netherlands were losing 0:1 against Brazil and their performance was far away from the best. But in the second half they managed to brace themselves together and created a real sensation as they kicked out the Canarinhos …

Netherlands – Brazil 2:1

Dirk Kuyt began the game in Port Elizabeth, with Anfield teammate Ryan Babel on the bench. The South Americans had been the better side in the first period, but the second half belonged to the Dutch. They drew level on 53 minutes as Wesley Sneijder’s in-swinging cross found the back of the net via the head of Brazil’s Melo.

Kuyt then claimed an assist as Holland went ahead, brilliantly flicking Arjen Robben’s corner across goal at the near post to allow Sneijder to nod home from close range.

Brazil’s cause wasn’t helped by the dismissal of Melo, who appeared to stamp on Robben with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Big joy for Dirk Kuyt and the Oranje team. Goed werk, jongens!
