Within a few minutes of Spain winning the World Cup Fernando Torres was pictured wearing a Liverpool scarf while holding the World Cup. Without a doubt this was a clear message on where his loyalties were and in no way was he moving to Chelsea or some other historically challenged club.
The next day as the team was parading the World Cup in Madrid, Nando was seen holding an Atletico Madrid scarf while lifting the World Cup. Of course vile Manc blogs jumped on the picture and claimed that Torres rubbed it in our nose with his latest gesture. Not at all, the Mancs are probably jealous that Howard Webb was not wearing a Manchester United scarf during the medal presentation.
Those who have read Torres’ auto-biography (now available in Paperback) would understand what it is all about, so here is an explanation of what is going on.
Torres has two loyalties, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool. Atletico have been his team since birth and he wanted to show his gratitude for the years he had at Atletico. I am sure many Atletico fans were upset when they saw Torres wearing the Liverpool scarf after winning the World Cup. While in Madrid he wanted to let these fans that he hasn’t forgotten about his roots and where he was from. Most of us would have done the same if ever we returned to our home towns as heroes.
That is what loyal grateful players do, Michael Owen, Are You Watching?
