Ryan Babel: Time to Shine

Posted by

For me Ryan Babel seems to be a complex player; one for me, I have never really understood or been able to fully judge his performances for the Reds. £10 Million striker come winger arrived in 2007 under Rafa from Ajax and has made around 130 appearances for the Reds with 21 goals. Not bad for someone consistently used as a sub.

There is no doubt the guy has talent. Three of the most famous men in football seem to agree. Van Basten has been quoted as saying Babel “has all the potential to become the next Thierry Henry.” Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has said that Babel has the ability to terrorise defenders in the Premier League with his pace and trickery with the ball. Former player Alan Hansen called upon Babel to “play like he did against Lyon, as he still possesses the ability to be a ‘top player,’ in one of our famous European Nights. So as a fan to all the other Reds out there, am I missing something???? Why is this guy not a regular?

We have all seen the qualities he contains, explosive appearances, great performances one game, and to be honest lacklustre the next. Babel would be first to admit this himself. His performance against Northampton led to him posting on his Twitter Page “No excuses for last nite .. We weren’t good enough.. And I #failed personally .. Haven’t lost faith, so I keep working..” As a follow on from this, he has been dropped from the 23 man Dutch squad. It would be fair to say less talented players have played more than him. Is it due to a lazy attitude in Melwood? Who knows? It is fair to say Ryan has never been allowed to develop consistency into his game; I cannot remember the last time he played two games in a row.

For me the most frustrating thing in the world is seeing a person having masses of talent and not reaching their full potential; either from being blocked or not pushing themselves. I personally wish Roy would give him a run of games to prove his worth. I have friends who support other teams who really rate him. How long can you hold someone on the bench until their confidence is shot? I want to see him do well as I believe in him, I have not lost faith either Ryan. I think now is the time to show his worth and get a regular run in the team.  Leaving someone on the bench for months and then expecting a performance, even against a Northampton Town, players will struggle. What are everyone else’s thoughts?

  1. To be honest what I have seen Babel has more than enough chances to perform. Any professional player in my opinion she take the chance if given and grab it. To me Babel has never grab the opportunity to prove his so called talent. Having said that, those three named in your article are true legends of the game and they obviously know a lot more than me. I would love to see Babel prove me wrong and I would be the first person to hold my hands up and acknowledge it but my heart says its too late and perhaps for him and Liverpool it would be best for him to move on.

  2. Every time Ryan comes on I think come on Ryan now show us what you can do. But as soon as something doesn’t come off for him, his head goes down. He doesn’t fight to get the ball back when he loses it. He just gives up too easily!!

  3. I’m going to be honest. I think Ryan Babel has all the capabilities to be a great Striker and even a great winger. However, I believe that all of our faith in him has hindered his abilities. I know this may sound foolish, but a player should not think they are great until they prove it to the world. Fernando Torres came to Anfield and proved his worth in gold right away. Ryan Babel came to Anfield hearing these things (“all the potential to become the next Thierry Henry”) and has lacked the ability to prove that. I want to do all I can to support Ryan Babel and to be honest, I believe he should have started way before Maxi in the match against United, but that’s a different story. Here’s the deal – I think Babel’s problem is that he has too much of a chip on his shoulder. He has heard from way too many former players and WAY TOO MANY FANS that he should start, but doesn’t have enough to show for it. I will say that his tweet about failing personally, was more admirable and not as Ryan Babel (no intention to make a rhyme) as I know him to be. If he (RYAN BABEL) reads this – I hope he can come out with some humility the next time we see him. The thing I like about Torres right now – is that he has proven himself great and at the moment he is struggling. You can see it in his face that he is humbled by it. I would ask Babel to do the same. Instead of expecting to be great – he needs to earn the title of being great. I hope all of that made sense.

  4. It would probably do him good to get loaned out to a championship side for a season with a guarantee that if he’s fit he plays. Playing week in week out against players who happily kick him into the air may develop the mental toughness he currently lacks. On the other hand if we just keep hold of him he could be playing for a championship side next season anyway.

  5. I think he needs to be shown some faith and a arm around the shoulder…if he has played well in one game, he was on the bench for the next. Personally I would not be able to take that for 3 years

  6. I seriously think that if Ryan is given game time he will show what he is capable of, he was forced out of the team when Riera came but I believe if Ryan goes to another club he will show what he can do with game time, and he will be another player we will regret losing.

  7. It surely is clear to see that Ryan Babel has an attitude problem. And dressing room antics have often been associated with Dutch players not performing in recent years. Maybe his twittering and rapping does not fit it well with old Uncle Roy’s way of thinking. It certainly upset Benitez!

And one would be blind not to notice the poor body language, lack of interest in chasing back and general missed opportunities in a Red shirt.

So has Ryan got anyone to blame but himself! YES. The management at LFC for one. All this said I would like to ask (as an ex player of some ability myself) who would you sooner face running at you. Babel, Ngog, Dossena, Maxi? I know a true survey of the Premier league defenders would show that only Ryan has the ability to induce fear in defenders. He is strong, has pace and an abundance of skill, something the other three have very little of! Yet they all get/got picked ahead of Ryan. And before Ngog fans blast “Ngog is scoring regularly so must be a better player” then I would reply, yes he is scoring…and playing. Scoring more than El Nino too, so is he a better player than Fernando? Maybe Man City will bid £50 for Ngog in the New Year then…I think not. Try to remember back to the summer, we could not give Ngog away, yet Spurs, West Ham and Arsenal were more than interested in our Ryan.

Ryan is young and needs a good talking too. But not talented and not better than Ngog and Maxi?

  8. Away at spurs last season opening game of season he started up front. If he ran more than a mile in 45mins I would be amazed. Rafa rightly subbed him at half time. His attitude stank and I have never seen a lazier display in almost 40yrs of watching the reds. Yes he has bags of potential, but has he a good enough football brain, or work ethic? From what I have seen the answer is no. I was hoping the new manager would be able to mould clearly talented players into great players, babel, aqua and insua stood out as perfect opportunities for Roy to demonstrate his technical knowledge and man management skills. Unfortunately he has shied away from these challenges and resorted to buying Joe average players like poulsen and konchesky instead.

  9. this guy iz born 2 be a footballer….he has talent, speed, aggressive but somehow when he enter z field he looks a bit panicked…maybe zat’s his main problem

  10. hopes we will c our new babel soon……….
come on liverpool….we believe in u………
    LFC rockzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  11. Ryan Babel is a quality player. Benitez totally destroyed his confidence by playing him on the left (a right footed player). If Babel started it’s gurenteed he will be the 1st substituted (unless any of the other players benitez didn’t like, Crouch or Keane or Bellamy were on the pitch), so a player is bound to be worrying. show a bit of belief in Ryan Babel give him whole games not 60 minutes then sit on the bench for 3 games.

  12. I Support Brian Livrpool needs to loan Babel for a season or two observe him and make decision. Consistency is very important and experiences & improvements comes with different challenges. Wish him all the best.

  13. i just hope we don’t hurry to sell him and then he goes somewhere else and become a star.look at bale for while people were saying how talented he was but he never showed it until now when started to get games and confidence.

  14. If Babel want rediscover his game he must change his shirt. It is better for him to go away from EPL. Maybe he can be fullfill some of his desires. It is not only for Babel but also for Lucas. Liverpool must sell and invest wisely which is good for a club.
