The history of Spirit of Shankly

Posted by

Spirit of Shankly just released thisgreat documentary highlighting the history of S.O.S. and what this great Union is all about. Please view the video, unfortunately there are some Reds who still don’t understand what the Union can do for them. It is important that we keep supporting S.O.S. as it is our voice as supporters of this great football club.

More info about the Union can be found at www.SpiritOfShankly.com

  1. There are so many ways to look at this. I can appreciate what SoS are trying to do but also at times feel that the reason Liverpool have hit such hard times on the pitch is because we’ve done something Liverpool have never done before and aired our dirty laundry in public. Just look at Newcastle United, the real fans(as people like to label themselves) always had a protest against the owners, they perhaps thought they were doing the best for the club but fans of other clubs just thought they were a laughing stock. A lot of attention has been drawn to Liverpool for all the wrong reasons and a conveinient excuse has been created for poor performances.

I will add that I believe SoS was formed for all the right reasons but I get annoyed that there are people that like to think that being part of SoS makes you a real fan and that if you don’t want to be associated with the SoS then you’re not. I would also like to say thank you to the SoS for your good intentions.

  2. Good video, but i also agree with the comment by ‘J’ LFC traditionally never aired its dirty laundry hope it goes back to that under NESV, but with Twitter and Facebook i wont hold my breath.

Antoinne write an article on the groundshare saga i want to know what people think on it, im against the idea myself.

I mean how can they think it will work there will be too much arguments deciding on things like will there be a Kop end, what colour the ground will be, Hillsborough memorial if it will still be there, The Greats of our club Shankly and Paisley statues will they stand next to a Toffee memorial? We are LFC and we want our own ground like Everton do, i dont beleive its in the best interests for noth to share. Match days wont even feel the same, the atmosphere would be totally shit……YNWA

  3. Okay great, we all hate the owners but the union has done damage not good, ruining relations between the board and the fans. There are plenty of fans who campaign well against the owners, normally, but SOS care about themselves over the club. Empire of the Kop, this is a great blog, but you don’t have to bum SOS to earn our respect.

  4. ” Why should we rely on unscrupulous businessmen to run our football club.” – Pete Hooton.

    Is right!

It’s about time the club was held to account over many many unfair practices involving the fans, from being ripped off over “Away match” travel to increases in ticket prices. SOS are there to argue your corner, and at least attempt to give the lifeblood of the club (The fans) a voice.

If you don’t like unions simply because it’s a union, or a form of socialism that it might be against your tory/right wing principles, well that’s your choice. SOS are never going to convert you. But the fans are the club, and treating them they way LFC have done in the past wont be tolorated anymore.

When did the club last offer “free” football coaching to kids in Liverpool? Even SOS’s outreach and education aims are better than the clubs. As a proud socialist Shanks would have been proud of SOS. He would have agreed with everything they’ve done, especially in the light of our current owners. And to fail to understand that, is a failure to understand “The Liverpool Way”. A doctrine that Shanks instilled into the club from top to bottom. It’s why SOS use one of his sayings for their strapline, and it’s that ethos that made us “Liverpool Football Club” – The most successful british team ever!

I don’t want any you non-native, nuevo-footie fans to forget that. That’s why SOS is necessary.

    JOIN THE UNION!

“The Socialism I believe in is everyine workiung for each other, everyone having a share in the rewards. It’s the way I see football, the way I see life.” – Bill Shankly.

  5. I was totally on board with Spirit of Shankly. They were engaging with the club, with local and national politicians, and with fans worldwide. Their Kop Charter was an excellent way to educate some of the younger fans how a real Liverpool fan should behave. It was a positive force that could unite anyone with a passion for the club. I was ready to slap my membership money on the counter, and say ‘sign me up’.
But then the cracks started to appear. Suddenly there was impatience with the board, with the whole sale process, and it resulted in a character assassination job on Purslow, simply for him wanting editorial control on an interview. Now he was a liar, a puppet of the owners, they were all as bad as each other. And then he ‘sacked’ Rafa. The cardinal sin. Suddenly the SOS policy seemed to be if you weren’t a 100% Rafa supporter, then you weren’t a true red.
Add to that their initial approaches to ShareLiverpool, which basically said ‘we are taking your idea, so we can merge and you do things our way, or we just do our own credit union and since we have more members, you will get buried’. A friend of mine was in the meetings and compared the SOS representatives to mob gangsters. S.O.S. – The egos have landed.
Don’t get me wrong, the core aims of SOS are still the same as mine and I stand shoulder to shoulder with them via the Save Liverpool FC campaign. Its a more inclusive umbrella group that transcends the egos and focuses on the removal of Hicks and Gillett. But for me, the militants, the firebrands and the rabble rousers got into SOS, the personal attacks started and it seemed to dilute their original aims. They began to operate outside the comfort zone of many of the fans. Now if the High Court decision goes our way and we are rid of the Yanks, I’m sure they will herald themselves as the very epitome of fan power… it will be interesting to see if any apology will be forthcoming from SOS to Purslow, Broughton and Ayre for their actions this week, which could see them as the real saviours of Liverpool FC….

  6. I don’t understand the point of all these separate groups, half of which I’ve never heard of before and apparently I would only know about if I spend time at certain message boards. Surely all coming together under one banner of supporters who have the best interest of the club and its support at hand, rather than just getting rid of Hicks and Gillett. Together we’re united and divided we fall? Just seems to me that certain people go off to make their own groups just to make a name for themselves.
