If Kaiser Franz can do it why can’t King Kenny?

If there is one team I admire for how they treat their great players it is Bayern Munich. Their current president is no one other than their legend Uli” Hoeneß who would be remembered for being part of the West German squad that won the 1974 World Cup and of course the Bayern squad that dominated Europe from 1973 to 1976. The chairman of the club’s board is former hit man Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who in the 80s was Bayern’s answer to Ian Rush.

This is nothing new as the Bavarian giants have a tradition of keeping their legends involved in the club and appointing them to high positions. Their greatest player, Franz Beckenbauer “Der Kaiser” has also served as President of the club and has held several positions within the club.

So why can’t Liverpool appoint Kenny Dalglish as chief executive? Some might come up with the age old excuse “he has no experience”. Did Christian Purslow have any experience about running a football club before he was appointed? When it comes to footballing matters no one out there comes close to Kenny. On top of being a footballing genius (he has proved it on the field and in the dug-out) the man has been a shining example of what the Liverpool Way is all about.

He (Kenny) has seen his former teammates become media pundits and trash the club, the king instead takes up a thankless position with the club as “Ambassador” going around smiling and opening club shops.
Come on give the king his crown back, he has earned it and it is good for our club. Fellow Liverpool Supporters trust Kenny more than anyone else because we all know that no one loves Liverpool F.C. more or has done more for our club than Kenny Dalglish.

  1. He’s a legend, but the Chief Executive role is a lot different to being an honorary President or Chairman.

A Chief Executive can be successful at a football club without any knowledge of football – it’s all about business acumen, of which, to my knowledge, Kenny has none. We need to appoint someone with a top business, possibly even sporting knowledge, and if he knows little about football you appoint people to advise him e.g. Comolli, Daglish etc.

  2. I absolutely agree.
In case of Bayern Hoeneß, Rummenigge and Beckenbauer are not the only ones.
Christian Nerlinger, a former Bayern player in the 90’s, is the general manager. Paul Breitner, left back with Hoeneß and Beckenbauer in the 70’s Bayern Squad is head of the scouting department of the club. Also in the the scouting department are former players Giovane Elber and Michael Tarnat (both played in the 90’s for Bayern).
And of course Gerd Müller, Germanys best sriker ever lived (he made the world cup winning 2-1 in the 74 final) is Assistant-coach of the reserve team.

Bayern call themselves a family. And of course they are.

And I think it is important that Steve G and Carra after they finished playing football should be involved in any position at Anfield. The club needs familiar faces behind the scenes.

  3. I agree, brilliant idea, he deserves more than an ambassadorial role, maybe not CEO, Id rather have someone with more experience for that job but definately a seat on the executive board on top of the role he has already

  4. If ever we needed financial stability it’s now, and although I have always been a fan of Dalglish he is not a businessman. He is a great ambassador for the club though. Our game has turned into a financial melting pot of excessive wages and mr 10%’s managing players with inflated ego’s so the ‘chief exec- elect’ needs to have the nous to keep the ship afloat.

  5. Definitely agree. Kenny knows what the club needs and he undertands the club. The game, the fans and he loves the club and the city. He’s dedicated to all what Liverpool is about. And he’s a peronality the others would respect and look up to.

P.S. and he’s not as arrogant as Beckenbauer.

  6. It would be great Antoine as you say to get one of the club’s legends in position of honor, all the more reason for the best talents around the world to know how much Liverpool fans love and salute their heroes.
However, I think one point you make about Purslow was a little naive..Purslow may not have had any experience of running a football club, but he had the experience of taking financially sick organizations on the right track..and when he was hired he was hired to do exactly that , and Liverpool was very much a financially sick club than a football club from his perspective..That he intervened in other issues is a different matter.

  7. We should make him a manager now till the end of the season and than give him a proper role. Maybe the one that Rafa had in mind. Is very depressing to see him (roy)as or manager.

  8. Good point Antoine. The man holds complete respect of everyone in and around the club and it is just time until NESV realises it. he would put the Liverpool way back into how the club works in a more modern perspective.
I still want Roy out though
