The Spanish Curse?

The young starlets wants to leave, despite great potential.

Today the news has been that Daniel Pacheco is wanting out of Liverpool and isn’t happy with the current way he is being treated by the managers. Pacheco was for the last few years our most promising young player and we can “blame Rafa” for bringing him here from the Barcelona youth team. He has featured for the Spanish Youth sides, also standing out and sparkling. He was even featuring in the first team at Liverpool and many fans had the feeling he could really be a star for us! So now he wants to leave our great club?

The word is Pacheco arrived late to a reserve team match and has been left out of matches as a punishment. But is it fair to do this do him? Is the boy allowed to show his frustration? In my opinion, I think as a player, when you do wrong to your team and manager, a punishment is an optional choice but sometimes necessary to show discipline. But when you are not being given any chances by either John McMahon or Roy Hodgson, why would he want to stay and train with no hope of playing? And it must be a bit of a confusing idea where senior players who are new and not performing (Poulson) can take a place on the bench, why not Dani? Or maybe its not the seniors and the youth? Jonjo Shelvey, a new arrival this year at Anfield also a very bright future and captain of the England U-19 squad, has already made both his Europa and Premier League debut and has made the bench for the past few games. Might be unfair to one who has worked for the past few years to earn a spon just to see it fade away?

So why is this titled the Spanish Curse?

At the end of the 2008-2009 Season, we were sitting at 2nd place, with Rafa Benitez as our manager and Xabi Alonso as a our play maker. Alsonso left to Madrid after a spill out with the boss and we dropped to 7th place the following season with the same manager, although he fought tooth and nail for us, Rafa didnt have what he needed. That season Rafa was fired and we were appointed Hodgson. He wanted 10 games to be judged, now asks for 38-55 matches, and has already brought us to the relegation zone, losses to both our biggest rivals, losses to some of the weaker teams in the league and lets not forget our “historic win” at Bolton away…

Now Pacheco wants to leave, and Rumors of Torres and Reina leaving are always popping up and seeming more realistic each time.. We can not let any more Spaniards leave the squad. I am not saying this is the answer to winning the league and ending all problems, but it definitely will not help us in any way.

We need to hold on to our youth players, NESV has already said if players want to leave, they can go. Also they haave said that they believe in the youth and want to build the team up from the bottom and spend wisely, rather than to buy out players and extraordinary prices and hope they adapt. Liverpool needs to keep and improve it’s depth, or we will not be a strong team, just a group of strong individuals.

So, we need to hold on to Dani, Torres, Reina, and ALL of our players that want to stay and perform 100%.

  1. Cant believe the way the lad is being treated, and Hodgson was lauded as a great man manager? Laughable. The man is a joke. He brings in ancient and useless wannabes and has beens like Konchesky and Poulsen, and drives out promising youth players like Dani.

What happened to promoting youth and not overspending on older players Mr Henry?

Get rid of Hodgson now is my advice, he is not fit to manage the team you want to make great.

  2. It’s fair to say that he couldnt get a sniff when Rafa was there either so there aint a lot different. Alonso reportedly left because of Rafa’s treatment amid the Barry fiasco also. And after a season where although we went close, we probably should have won it, and that was probably down to a shortage of strikers- that was definitely down to Rafa. We then spent mega millions on a right back and a midfielder that failed to win a regular slot (and is subsequently on loan in his homeland), when the fans were crying out for a decent second striker to partner an injury-prone Torres. All I’m saying, even if people do wear rose-tinted specs, is that the problems were already at Anfield. Hodgson hasnt done enough to endear himself to the fans, and that does include me, but it is fair to say that he walked into an absolute mess.
    From another passionate red.

  3. @tim

He made 7 appearances last season. That’s good for a youth player.

Aquilani is performing brilliantly in Italy, Roy made a mistake letting him go.

Johnson should be in the first team now and Roy isn’t playing him.

Roy still hasn’t bought a striker. He bought a left back, and some midfielders.

    You can’t Blame Rafa anymore.

  4. @george great article mate we have a star on our hands it seems roy does not want to use any player unleSs he is english or rather fits the roy mould of safe an predictable. We need dani an all our flair players

  5. Agree with you Phil. The man is a joke. The english press likes him but the important people the LFC fans dont. So NESW can you please sack him now. Please please please

  6. How can he be allowed to let Pacheco leave. All the players who can play football are anoyed with him and want to leave. Torres,Reina,Johnson, Agger and now Pacheco what the hell is he doing to our club.I was very depressed watching Liverpool being outplayed by Stoke on saturday. I’m very very sad lfc fan at the moment.judge me after 10 games now he wants 55.What a joke of a manager.

  7. @Bekim Not to mention getting straight forward verbal abuse by Roy to a few of those players you named. It seems the man is afraid to take any blame so he generalizes poor results or says its because one player that we didnt win. “every game is hard” “This team won last week so we dont expect a win” he has no confidence!!

A manager needs to come out and not entirely, but in part be like Jose Mourinho, come and say “yes, this next opponent in top of the table and havnt lost in weeks, but its time for that to change, and our lot have the power together to do that” — its not cocky, or rude, or instigating, but up lifting, confident and passionate!

Roy get out or learn first hand how we go rid of Hicks and his reputation. We are more than “Internet terrorists” for the club!

  8. Roy is walking the tight ropes with Liverpool and he has the safety net below him (Owner’s support). For me Roy talks too much and there is no action. Basically the man has no clues of what he is doing. At the moment there are players in the team who do not deserve to be wearing the red shirt. Kuyt, Johnson, Lucas, Maxi, Konchesky and Skirtle are players who do not give confidence to the team. Many of these players have been very poor regualarly and have let the team down badly. Their lack of skills, ability to control and pass the ball and general game intelligence is allarming. Suddenly it appears that the players have lost confidence of their own abilities. After Rafa being a control freak it is the opposite with Roy. Without the manager giving instructions from the sideline all the time, the players do not know what to do with the ball and are afraid to hold on to it. They are making more mistakes now than before. Roy has to take risks with the youngsters now. He has to bring in players like Spearing, Johnjo, Kelly , Pacheco , Wilson, Amoo etc to replace the dross mentioned earlier in the starting eleven, just like Alex Fergoose did with Becks, Scholls, N-evils, Giggles. He has to play the younsters regularly from now if he wants to save the team. No point depending on the dross we have now. I believe the younsters will show the required spirit, skills, pace and determination that the others lack.

  9. I’d like to know why he dropped Kelly after being outstanding against Chelsea ..when there’s a difficult descision to leave out a senior player its easier to bottle it and leave out the young man

  10. Dear Mr. Henry,

As you have clearly stated. Liverpool will now be a team whose decisions are driven by consensus. As such the fans have decided that the abilities of the gaffer for the past games has left much to be desired leaving an absolute bad taste in the mouth and a great pain in the hearts of the fans who bleed RED. PLease note that blood red is different. If we were to decide to unceremoniously let our young starlets feel disillusioned forcing them to leave the hallowed grounds of Melwood (most never had a chance to even get to Anfield proper), put faith in a gaffer who looks absolutely inept in performing his role (basically crap and useless) for 55 games, we will see ourselves relegated and that I feel might be the change your team have promised us. With tactics or the complete lack of it, we might even find it hard to top even that table. I cannot comment about baseball as I have no idea where to start. It feels the same way when we see our team play. It’s like we have a baseball coach and out team make runs to corners as we try to punt the ball into the breeches. There’s no left or right field. We don’t catch whatever is being thrown at us. We’re not Striking any fear into the opponents as we take the walk with our heads down. Yes we know you have turned the Red Sox into something special but we are already something special and the only difference is (it hurts me to say this) we will be branded the Red Sucks. Your only constant the saving grace is that once a RED we die a RED. But please don’t take advantage of that and deem us as blind followers. We are anything but that.

  11. Roy’s selection of players has been intriguing, illogical and farcical. And he keeps complaining he is thin on players when he has some performing lads like Kelly. Roy just like to be different by playing players out of position like Meireles. Koncheskey is not performing and he keeps him on the team sheet every game. Astonishing! Promising lads like Pachecho should be given their chance at least on the bench.

A good manager makes the right decisions on players and needs to be a good motivator and leader. Roy is none of these. Surprising after he has been touted as an experienced and good manager.

LFC fans like to support their manager if things are going in the right direction even if we don’t win every game because we understand a manager needs time. But we can’t be supporting a manager whom we clearly see is not even moving the club in the right direction. Roy is just not suited to Liverpool.

Quite simply, Please sack Roy before its too late.

  12. Great Article Brandon. I think we should all stop sympathising with Roy and start making a mass call for his removal. He is no good Period!

  13. George,
I’m a big fan of Pacheco and countless times last year, I and thousands more were begging for him to be brought on. In those 7 appearances how many minutes did he play?
Johnson has been very poor from a defensive point of view so a manager has the right to exercise his authority or has player power won?
If you think that I’m happy with how things are then you are wrong but a lot of this went on last year too remember. We lost probably our most skillful and influencial player due to poor man management and the targeted player didnt even end up coming either! All I’m saying is that it’s a double sided coin. Hodgson aint really that much worse than Rafa. I wouldnt have wanted Dalglish to fall from grace though because he would have walked into the same problems, and he’d been out of management for a lengthy spell.

  14. Further to my post I’ve had a quick look at last seasons stats- from what I could find he made a substitute appearance at home v fiorentina when we got beat, a boxing day sub appearance versus wolves and a sub appearance in the E.L. against Unirea. I couldnt see any more game time on the stats site but I may be wrong.
The lad is a gem and both managers have drastically underused him. The likes of Voronin and N’gog shouldnt be getting in front of such a talent.

  15. It’s come to a point where I constantly scratch my head. The kid goes out and proves himself internationally, has done so in the reserves for the last 2 years and plays quite well in his short spells. We’ve been looking for some attack minded players to enter the Liverpool fold for many years and haven’t seen anyone since Stevie G to be honest! Now we have a player who shows a “no fear” mentality and he’s benched! We’ve seen very little from Cole and has had concerns in the middle of the pitch and on the wings, yet Hodgson “grounds” Pacheco and we, the loyal fans hear nothing but a little this and that! I’d rather play Pacheco over Cole, Lucas, Poulsen, Jovanovic, Babel, Spearing and even Ngog! The kid has class and every time I don’t see him even on the bench I and many ‘Pool fans get EXTREMELY aggrevated! If he’s not wanted by Hodgson, well…….LET HODGSON GO! I’m sure King Kenny would play him if he was the gaffer! Now that Stevie G is gone, lets see Hodgson sink!
