Fowler To Join MK Dons

Posted by

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler, affectionately known as God, will leave the shores of Australia in mid-February and return to the UK to take a coaching role at the MK Dons.

The 35-year-old will see out his remaining playing time for Australian side Perth Glory and then link up with MK Dons manager Karl Robinson, who knows Fowler from his time as an Anfield Academy coach. Fowler struck 183 times in the red shirt of Liverpool across two spells for the club, amassing 369 appearances in total, fans waved goodbye to one of their favourite sons as he Gerard Houllier sold him to Leeds Utd for £12.75m mark in November 2001. It wasn’t to be the last time that the player graced Anfield though as Rafa Benitez made the surprise move in January 2006 to bring an elated Fowler back home on a free transfer from Manchester City.

Fowler found the net 230 times in English football throughout his career span covering Liverpool, Leeds United, Manchester City, Cardiff & Blackburn Rovers before heading to Australia to become the marquee player for North Queensland Fury for a season, having since made the switch to Perth Glory.

Karl Robinson, manager of the MK Dons, commented on the forthcoming arrival of Robbie Fowler:

“When his season finishes he’ll be over on a regular basis working with the forwards as part of my coaching team.”

A further Liverpool connection already exists at the Dons with player-coach Dietmar Hamann already on board alongside Robinson.

“Didi’s really stepped up to the mark, sometimes when people move on and people move forward you don’t realise how much quality they have in them,” Robinson added.

“He’s a very good coach and if he can pass a small amount of his experience on to these young players then it will only enhance the team.”

  1. As an LFC supporter living in MK, this is the best news I’ve heard since Fowler rejoined LFC! Time to head down to the training ground (5 mins away) and get a shirt signed!

  2. Maybe I’m sentimental and maybe even hopeful but isn’t this what we hope for Liverpool? A real Boot Room to make sure that we stay close to our roots? If Kenny was to take over, surround him with ex-players? Sammy is already there and in tune to the modern methods. Get Sami, Rush is already there, Stevie and Carra and Pepe and Didi…. I mean can they be as bad as now? Even if they were to fail and improve on our situation (which I doubt will be the case) we would trust them to give it all they have and play the Liverpool way. That’s what JH needs to know and understand. We’re just not Liverpool anymore. We are a team in the famous RED kit, but we’re not Liverpool. You put stripes on us and we could be the Magpies or Juve. It’s like the rock bands of the 60’s and 70’s. They were distinct and you could tell the difference. The sound, the style, the groove. We’ve lost our immortality. I mean seriously. Do teams quake in their boots when the see the ‘THIS IS ANFIELD’ sign anymore? I believe only the fans still feel the sacred aspect of it. Only the fans still shed tears when You Never Walk Alone is sung. I have never had the honour or guess I ever will be able to hear the emotion of hearing it sung in Anfield but that doesn’t stop me shedding tears singing along watching the TV or the team live when they come over to the neck of our woods. Do they realise that this is Liverpool? The management, the coaching staff and the players maybe for a few. We’re not Milan, Madrid or Manure. We’re Liverpool. The GREATEST CLUB period. We get players who understand this and they become REDS for life. We don’t get guys who use our hallowed ground as a stepping stone for future endorsements. As I feel a certain person is using us as a last ditch attempt of having success at this level but we can see it’s just isn’t happening. Why do we want a team of Carras. The commitment, the loyalty, the understanding of what it means to put on that RED shirt. No shirking. No hiding. No whingeing. We are not a team that requires time to succeed. We go in with the mentality to succeed from the get go. I know this keeping it in the family might fail as in Souness (to me the actual start of the bloody rot), but King Kenny has done i before. He helped us see the great times and was there to guide us through our worst and saddest. If that’s not the resume of someone who should be the one then who else. Most of us the fans have never coached but how do we stay up to date with the changes and able to see the problems. Just because he’s been out of it doesn’t mean he’s lost it. Would he risk everything to take on the job if firstly he thought he couldn’t do it. He was willing to risk it all because he knew like us, the fans, we were not Liverpool anymore. And he would do everything possible to make sure we were Liverpool once again. YNWA.

  3. Fowler has pretty much rubbished this report. Says he’s interested in playing for as long as he can and definitely seeing out the end of his contract with Perth, which doesn’t finish till March.
