Liverpool 1 Steaua Bucharest 1
We saw a much changed eleven in this game and to be honest they did quite well, for the first half at least. In the second half it wasn’t so good and the final score perfectly reflected that. I thought that we started well and had a good first half, but then went and had a poor second half which didn’t live up to the expectations of the first half.
Aside from Pepe Reina, the team tonight was not the usual Liverpool lineup. The back four have never played together before but I would have to say did a good job in general, apart from the goal, but that wasn’t totally their fault in the end as that was just a rather unusual error on the part of Reina, who must have been kicking himself afterwards. In general I would have to say that Aurelio, Wilson, Krygiakos and Kelly all did a reasonably good job in this game.
In the middle Joe Cole was back, which was nice to see, and he had a few good touches but wasn’t quite his usual self, no doubt due to the fact that he hadn’t played for a little while; Poulsen was pretty anonymous in the middle but didn’t really make that many mistakes; Jonjo Shlevey again had a reasonable game in the middle of the park; Danny Pacheco had some good touches and Jovanovic had a decent game also and scored our only goal of the game, which was rather well taken. Then upfront we had Babel who, I can’t say did a great deal, but conversely didn’t do a great deal wrong when he was actually doing something.
Again this was a game where we should have had two or three goals in the first half as Joe Cole had a pretty good chance, but decided to have one more touch, which he didn’t really need if you ask me, he should have just leathered it the first chance he got, but he didn’t and it just fizzled out.
Still in the end we qualified for the next stage of the competition and now it doesn’t really matter what happens in the next European match against Utrecht, as we will still be top of the group even if we lose!
