Oh Fernando: We Loved You! And Now We’ll Hate You Even More!!

Posted by

Fernando Torres is gone. And as much as we would like to forget about him, it’s only human to hate him and curse him in Chelsea colors.

Torres was not just an LFC player, but he was the faint glimmer or hope (of course along with Stevie, Carra, Pepe) that helped us pass through the troubled times of last ownership era. Unfortunately, the Torres era has ended soon after. Both, lasted about three and a half years. And, both saw us off trophy-less. Ironically, Fernando left us in quest of trophies… What is also of note here is that Fernando hasn’t won any great club honors. Actually, none whatsoever in the top flight of club football. Even the two international titles saw not too many notable performances from him. He was totally overshadowed by David Villa, ironically, his close friend. 1st February 2011 promises to be a dawn of new era for Liverpool FC and apart from the signings, we’ve also got rid of the silver-repeller, trophy-jinx  kid.

More than two-thirds of the time that Fernando was here, he played sub-par or was unfit. At times, he was even ‘diabolical’. But we didn’t say that loud. We loved him too much to hurt him, lest he read or heard any. If someone said something bad, we were sure to shoo them away, like Kenny’s statement about the magic wand.

Quite simply, he was something we absolutely loved about Liverpool. He was also something we were proud of. World’s best striker playing for us thru the worst times, standing by us (last August’s interview; Scarf and World Cup photo)… all the virtues of being a Red and all the virtues of being a really really loved Red.

But what was Fernando?

  1. He was a sulker, Of course
  2. He was a jinx – he never won anything for any club (maybe that’s taking it a little too far but also has a feel-good optimism about it)
  3. He was disloyal
  4. He was disrespectful – while you can say a lot of things to please the 50,000 odd Chelsea of the world, say that this is as big as it gets is downright disrespectful to LFC.
  5. He was money-minded (amazing you can say that about footballers because they already make more in a week than most people would dream about making in a year and add image-rights, sponsorships, bonuses etc etc..)
  6. He was a chicken – sought out in troubled times
  7. He is a bad decision maker – I mean c’mon, Chelsea? If you so desperately want a trophy, go to Barcelona.

I loved Fernando immensely. So much so, that his Liverpool betrayal feels like a personal heartbreak and I do not feel ashamed of wishing that he plays his worst football for Chelsea. We loved him so much that we’re going to hate him even more.

But, I feel the shirt burning is uncalled for. Things you love in life should get precedence over things you hate. If you burn the shirt, the crest gets burnt too. I mean, common guys, can’t you get a poster of him wearing something other than a Liverpool shirt? Paper burns with better effect, especially since the effort was made only to be on TV.

Why he did what and did and when he did? Well, no one really knows this. It’s easy to assume that his agents poisoned him. This, I believe, is the love we have for him speaking. We still don’t want to blame him entirely. We want to believe that the agents poisoned our Kid. I feel that Fernando is a man who can only perform when he is confident. And a confident man, he is not. He is doubtful about his fitness, his form and, more importantly, his longevity. He is longing for a club trophy and didn’t how long he had to get one. He didn’t believe Liverpool were playing UCL next season and saw pastures elsewhere. Although he was planning it for long, it can be thought of as Plan B. The inactivity in the first half on January window may have been a case too. Or may be a tiff with another player or support staff. May even be plain and simple money. But I believe it was Champions League football (indications in his Chelsea interview –‘competing everywhere’), this season’s and next’s. After the next season Fernando would be 29+ and would be way past his prime; past, he already is. At one moment you’re thinking that you can’t play Champions League football till Aug’12 and the next moment it occurs ‘Wait! I can play that in Feb’11, only if…’ All said, maybe he is just a megalomaniac and thought he was too big for the club and wanted to move to another one (again indications from the interview when he implied Chelsea is as big as it gets). Whatever it was, he left us at the most inopportune time. He is definitely a traitor and wouldn’t and shouldn’t be our hero. Love, on the other hand, is a feeling that will take it’s own time to fade…

I sincerely believe that life’s ironies play their part. Karma will come full circle.

Here’s what I believe would pan out – we will lift a trophy this season (that could only mean Europa) and Chelsh*t will fall short of all three they’re in.  What may also turn out is that Liverpool manage 4th and Chelsea are left behind at 5th. Would love to see Fernando’s face then! By the way, I hope he took away some pictures of the European cups we have in the cabinet.

All said, only if someone was to tell us tomorrow that ‘Fernando Torres has too much respect for Liverpool FC and as a part of the Chelsea deal, he insisted that he shouldn’t be debuted against them..’, would we not forgive him? If he didn’t know, we truly loved him. That ain’t gonna happen. That ain’t true either if I were to believe some reports.

Bye Bye Kid, we loved you. But good to see you’re loved so much in Chelsea already. Good to know that the manager and thousands of supporters welcomed you. Good to know that there were so many autograph hunters at your first day in training. Oh wait, it wasn’t about the fans anyway!!

  1. @Kaushal Goyal. please tell me, how bitter can bitters become? Torres gave Liverpool FC one chance after another but in the end he could see that it was NOT the big club that he was led to believe it was.

  2. Nicole, I don’t know how to measure bitterness, do you have a scale? I can just say I am very bitter as is apparent from above.
By the way, what brings you to a Liverpool fansite?

  3. He scored 81 goals for us in three-and-a-half years, much better than Michael Owen’s heyday, and people start to write him off saying “He did not win us any trophies.” That is nonsense. He was our best player in the tremendous 2009 season – a title we could have won with only two more victories.

And saying he did not contribute to Spain’s two international titles: WRONG. He scored the only goal in the 2008 final, and eventually voted third in the world player of the year.

You may say we will be better off without him, and I can agree with you to a certain extent. But don’t be that bitter, this is so UN-Liverpool!

  4. What brought me here? The short answer is your childish comments! Nando did what EVERY other professional with any self respect would do.

  5. Seriously, enough is enough. How many times are we going to dwell on this?

Hows about moving on and wishing him the best?
Yes we are all hurt by the move and we feel betrayed but Nando had his reasons!
Yesterday i felt like everything is coming to an end but guess what, it didnt. We have 2 new signings and things are still looking good.

So many people call themselves LFC fans but yet they couldnt care less about Suarez or Carrol…
3 weeks ago we were all crying Suarez and now we have him (it may be at the expense of Nando but we have a young fresh hungry player…wait make that 2!)

Dont forget all the good memories he has given us. Cherish them and let him carry on with his life, be it a mistake or not. I wish him all the best

    LFC fan in South Africa

  6. It’s about time th admin of this site (Antoine?) put some restraint for non LFC fans from commenting, they only brought some heat! But maybe that’s the sign about how really great our beloved LFC is. I, for once, never lurking around Chelsh*t or Manur* fans-sites and or put any comment on it, not really interesting to read whining and grumbling those fans, but LFC is something else, empire fo the kop is one of the best fans blog, and it’s free :)

  7. Can I just say if certain people on here think that Chelsea are a bigger than Liverpool need to go and read up on their history. Chelsea are NOT AS BIG as LIVERPOOL anybody with a brain would tell you that. I don’t even need to go into details…

  8. On the contrary LFC were infinitely patient with Torres and his string of injuries even to the point of appointing a personal physio for him.The fans always backed him in spite of his many substandard lacklustre performances. That LFC won nothing in his time at Anfield is not the fault of one man but Torres needs to have a good look at himself and his couldn’t care less attitude.

  9. i wont comment on others.

but regarding burning torres shirt? i will do it. i wont even hesitate doing it. BUT let me rephrase. I will do it by burning torres’s CHELSHIT shirt.

    NOT, NEVER OUR SACRED SHIRT.

    YNWA lads.

  10. It is amazing Kaushal but Chelsea fans just cannot get what they want fron their own sites so they keep coming to ours! In some ways they are trying to find a little bit of glory and that is something Chelsea people like Nicole have little of..
Still a sad day from such a traitorous man.

  11. When Keegan left us.. King Kenny came in.. When King’s age running out Rush came in… When Rush playing days coming to end The God Fowler came in followed by Owen… Then we go Torres.. but when Torres left we got double prfect deal.. Suarez and Carroll. So no worries.. this 2 guys are fighters and warrior for us to bring back our days to top level.. Biggest boost is Return Of King Kenny. YNWA

  12. You know there are certain things that don’t need to be said but if certain people think Chelsea are a bigger club than Liverpool really to go and read up on both clubs history and they will see that Liverpool are indeed a far BIGGER CLUB than Chelsea… SMH! Some people need to check themselves before talking SHIT!

  13. The best thing for LFC was to get rid of him, we got a good pay day and now the club can move on and upwards. I for one loved Torres and he could have waited till the end of season and then go on good terms, as it stands he will only be remembered as a traitor!!

  14. Nicole as a Liverpool fan its not the fact that torres left that hurts. Its the fact that he left us after we started to look more promising and he declared his desire to leave Liverpool with only 3 days left in the transfer window. The fact that he went to one of our most bitter rivals also shows a lot of disrespect because Liverpool fans really loved him and he was well on his way to becoming a Liverpool legend almost at the level Daglish is held at. If torres left in the summer for somewhere like Barcelona, it wouldn’t have hurt to much and he would still have been a Liverpool legend. But now he has backstabbed us at the time we needed him to stand up most.Thats why it hurts!

    1. Torres will not play in Spain because he dislikes their style of football. He wants to play in Europe where he feels the true talent lies. Thats why he won’t play for Barcelona

  15. A bit bitter that…..I thought this more fitting!

Now it hurts. Now I know we won’t see that rolls royce of a player gliding over the anfield turf to terrorise defenders anymore. That we won’t see the first touch, the sublime touch and turns, the explosive pace anymore. That we won’t see his cannonball finishes, his cheeky dinks over prone goal keepers, his unerring passes into the corner of the net, his link up play with Gerrard. It hurts.
To see him grinning and holding a blue shirt. it hurts. To think his first game for Chelski will be against us. Chances he will score? Extremely high I would think. In fact I’d be surprised if he doesn’t! More hurt come the weekend.

Has he played like a drain this season? Yes. Has he looked at times devoid of effort? Yes. He called Chelsea a top level club. There is an argument that he has individually failed to have the impact on Liverpool that would make us a top level club again. That he has contributed hugely to our recent decline. Through his slumped shoulders, individualism, arrogance, aloofness, and lack of application. Certainly this season we have been less of a team with him in it. You might argue for the last three years too however.

Benitez let our striking options run down, because no-one could play with Torres. There wasn’t room for a partner. Which left us devoid of options when like the racehorse he is, he broke down.

We may become a better team. We will certainly be a better squad (though no wide players in yet is my biggest concern, and a 35m monster who needs delivery), and we will certainly as a team display a better mentality. As Benitez knows, it is all about mentality.

But I’ll miss Fernando, and the hurt will endure. For a while at least. Fernando Torres YNWA (well you will this Sunday, but best wishes after that!)

  16. Nicole, let’s say for argument’s sake that what you’re saying is true .even then, there were better ways Torres could have gone about this entire ordeal. His actions, and timing unfolded in such a way that it was disrespectful to the fans and club that have been nothing but supportive of him. As an lfc supporter, I and many others I’ve spoken to have always felt that a players contentment is important. Leaving the club because you’re unhappy is one thing, anyone can understand that. Blatantly slagging off your old club, that supported and adored you is another. What a dick move. Anyway I agree with Goyal on most counts, especially burning the shirt. What an embarrassment to the other lfc fans. We were once known as the best fans in the world, let’s try and keep it that way, shall we?

  17. I like the fact that other fans have to come on here, obviously their own fan websites are inferior like their clubs! So to Nicole enjoy writing comments on here its nice to have someone on here we can ridicule. YNWA

  18. Wait… Liverpool not a big club?! Oh the things they come up with these days.

In order to command respect, you must show it. This man showed us great disrespect with the timing, manner, and destination (!!!!!) of his departure. I only wish I could be there to boo him on Sunday.

  19. would hate for torres to get booed on his return as much as i hated listening to owen getting booed. torres is not from liverpool, didn’t support liverpool, he just came to do a job, enjoyed his time with us, then got another job, end of! he could have been a legend but now won’t be, let that be punishment enough. we liverpool supporters have a reputation for showing more class than hating ex-players, let’s keep it that way. the best thing we can do on his return is to give carroll and suarez the support that he will never experience again!

  20. Just have to say that Torres leaving is the best thing that could’ve happened to LFC.To say Chelski are bigger than us is absolute rubbish.Yes they’ve won more things over the last few years but everywhere in the world this club is known, and that’s from nt really doing alot these last 20 years!

Enjoy the money Torres and the plastic, fickle Chelski fans.Never thought I’d say it but hope united stuff you when you play them.Any chance I can have the money back for your autobiography I bought my daughter for Christmas, I wish I bought her harry potter now, that’s a more believable story

  21. I agree its the way he left us, the timing of the transfer request, it hurts and will hurt for a long time, but hey Nando all the things you said upon joining Chelsea heard them all before when you joined us, how short sighted can you be, yes you may get Champions League this season but will you in the next couple of years, they are an aging team we are young and will start rising up the league again

Thanks for the good times you gave us, but that over now we have a new bright future with Suarez and Carroll and with King Kenny as the manager how good does the future look for us

The future is bright the future is RED YNWA

  22. U know I think this has just given us he incentive to get out there n fight for 4th spot.. Fight for the league nxt year.. Thanks fernando I think u just gave the whole of Liverpool team and fans the drive to show what u will be missing.. Suarez and Carroll YNWA….

  23. Good bye Nando enjoyed some good times, watched some great goals scored by you, a gift against Chelsea. But you had to spoil it did’nt you, three days before closure, criminal unforgivable.
I hope people do not boo you on your return to Anfield, if indeed you do return to Anfield???
a true Liverpool fan would not boo an exred.
As for the burning of the Liverpool shirt, never on gods earth, I have no words for scum like this, they are morons posing in front of a tele camara they are not Liverpool supporters, no brainers nothing more.
Looking forward to seeing the new boys fit in, I have good vibes with things to come and Suarez is in the team selection starting tonight come on Redmen, a win would do nicely.

  24. Bang on Eileen. As I said, it would be retribution and so, so satisfactory to see LFC 4th and CFC 5th at the end of the season. And if Stevie G lifts the Europa Cup later, it would really heal the hurt.

South African Red, I’m as excited as any about the signings and the intent shown in the window. Just that the above article wasn’t about them. It was only about how I felt regarding Torres.

Nicole- Seriously, how did you get on this page? Do you ‘like’ our facebook page? Do you ‘follow’ our twitter? You’d know what those verbs mean. If you don’t like or follow LFC or EOTK, what did we do to get the honor of your visit? Thanks, nonetheless.

DrakeRichards – true man, you can always buy replicas in the market. May be Abramovich can get some custom made with diamonds and all. He ain’t winning one for sure. Then may be he can have a ceremony with Terry and Torres lifting it. There can be lots of projection screens behind them showing fans waving plastic flags. And a super audio system for the cheers.

  25. u ppl r crazy!!! how can u hate him cuz he left? when you love some1 ull love him no matter where he plays!!! Fernando will ALWAYS be my hero, and i STILL LOVE HIM.
    YNWA

  26. Agree with some girl there….

Wish you all the best Fernando “El Nino” Torres…

Just don’t score any winning goal again us or even just tied one!!

    YNWA

  27. Torres, i trusted you, my family trusted you now you have gone. you were one of the best players, when you scored first it made the team believe THEY could score now nothing…
YOU WILL ALWAYS WALK ALONE NOW TORRES xx

  28. I think Torres has shown very poor judgement, and it may well haunt him. His decision was based on pre- Dalglish return circumstances.
He came to Liverpool to be with the likes of Benitez, Alonso, Masherano, Beniyoun, Crouch, Riise etc. Suddenly he looked around and there was a midtable manager at best and some dubious other arrivals. In that light it wasn’t entirely surprising that he wanted to leave. Ultimately I’m delighted that he has funded what I think is going to be a fantastic new forward line, with players who can keep the ball.

  29. he was great… WAS!!! he did not care about the club or the fans, only about the money. It was not about trophies, what are the chances chelsea gets anything this season? why did he leave? you can think of him as a whore: we paid for him, enjoyed him, got the best out of him, but in the end we all knew he would leave for another team that paid more!!! hahahahahahahaha!!! last season he spent more time injured than playing, so I think it was a great deal for the team anyway…

  30. Kaushal

You need to get a life, he moved because he was let down by gillette and hicks, roy hodgson being appointed manager and of course playing football with so many average players. He is world class that’s why the majority of liverpool fans are feeling pain right now, feeling betrayed , disloyal because of what? The fact he joined a premiership and fa cup winners team and the likelihood also being they will qualify for the champions league again?

Get real guys , fact of life , you had history and this time you automatically assume you still are the best BUT the results show you are average and you haven’t won a respectable trophy or indeed the premiership for quite some time. Start rebuilding and get over the fact that other teams appeal more highly and quite rightly than your beloved LFC with your istoree…

  31. i HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Fernando torres
supported him for 7 years (i am only 13 yrs old)
    i hate hate him
i will not support chelsea or man utd in my life
