It’s all in our hands!

Yesterday the Gods smiled on us at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea edged out Spurs in what turned out to be a tense and unentertaining encounter. The Blues recovered from a goal down, but both goals were marred by controversy. In the first instance the ball had not gone completely over the line, and in the second Kalou was quite clearly in an offside position. This means Spurs are now just three points ahead and the goal average is quite comfortably in favour of the Reds. The tide has turned in our favour and it’s up to us to make the most of it.

The Reds now have to face four tests which will determine their final table position, and more importantly, whether they will feature in Europe next season. With both Clubs having four games left, the Reds’ trickiest fixture, in my view, is the away game to Fulham which really seem to have hit their stride in recent weeks. Spurs on the other hand, face relegations strugglers Blackpool and relegation zone newcomers Birmingham at home, and Liverpool and Man City away. The prospects look positive; it’s basically all in our hands now! It’s very likely that his predicament will be settled at the 15th May showdown at Anfield where we will host Spurs in what may become a 5th place decider.

Today’s game against Newcastle has its perils. The Toons have lost only one game more than us, and have scored two goals less, but they have a much higher number of draws compared to us. Liverpudlians Kevin Nolan (this season club top scorer) and Joey Barton will strive to shine at Anfield, while Jose Enrique (the most utlilized Newcastle player this season and a renowned Liverpool transfer target) will try to persuade Dalglish that he is the man for that much maligned left-back position. Flanagan will have a tough afternoon containing Jonas Guitierrez. Hopefully, Andy Carroll will play some part in the proceedings and contribute towards a very important and much needed victory.

More than seeking revenge for the 3-1 defeat sustained in December at St.James’s Park, the Reds need to produce another tactically intelligent and passionately intense display to climb to fifth, and Kenny will be eager to extend our unbeaten home run under his reign to ten games. Another important milestone will be Jamie Carragher’s 665th game for the Reds which will soon see him become the second player to have played most games for the Reds in the Clubs history. Congratulations Jamie and thank you for being such a loyal and passionate servant to the Club we love.

Good luck Reds, make us proud!

  1. `Last season Europa League football-finished seventh in the Premier League. This season Europa League football-likely Premier League finishing position fifth. Next season Europa League football will be detrimental once again to the Premier League campaign. There is no major money to be earned by winning the Europa League. Bob Paisley always said that the League title should be the top priority every season, that should still remain the case. Playing in the Europa League on a Thursday night allows for only the Saturday to prepare for a crucial league game, as we saw at West Ham that has serious consequences.

    1. Hi Kenny. Why should the Europa League be detrimental to the PL? Why do Man Utd go almost all the way season after season in almost all competitions? Of course the PL is top priority, you’d be a moron not to believe that, but today football is made of other competitions and the sponsors that fork out millions want maximum exposure! I reiterate that Liverpool needs european competition. Obviously the prize is not as enticing as the CL, but there is money to be had, and gate sales alone are always welcome.

      1. Did you not notice the defeat at West Ham which came after the 1-0 against Sparta the previous Thursday night?

        1. Yes, but Liverpool also trashed Villa 3-0 after an Europa League game (Steaua Bucharest)!!!! They also won 2-0 at Sunderland three days after playing Sporting Braga!! Your argument, yet again, does not hold!

          1. The Villa game was on a Monday night not a Sunday. We only got ahead against Sunderland when they had Mensah sent off which was later rescinded. The problem is when the opposition has 11 men on the pitch in these games on a Sunday like West Ham had then LFC invariably run into a brick wall in these games.

          2. Typical of you to find the needle in the haystack, yet your arguments remain unconvincing. However you are now convincing me that essenstially you are not a Liverpool fan. Your point was that Liverpool lost to West Ham because of the Europa League game a few days before. I gave you two examples were Liverpool won convincingly after Europe League ties.
The West Ham and West Brom games were lost because for some reason the team did not go on the pitch with the right spirit and commitment. Liverpool need to build a team capable of competing on all fronts.
If your mentality was to become reality, we might as well play Premier League football and nothing else!
            Lame arguments Kenny!

          3. So you disagree with the greatest LFC manager of all time Bob Paisley that the league should be the top priority every season and than the Champions League? Look at what happened to Arsenal competing on all fronts this season, one minute Wenger was saying they were going to win 4 trophies, in the blink of an eye they ended up with nothing. The danger of competitions like the Europa League is that they expose the players to a poorer standard of European football. LFC can and should be winning this league even with the current squad they have as United, Chelsea etc are all incredibly overrated so the only target the club should have next season is the Premier League. Look at what the points total of the champions is going to be this season-at most 82 points and quite possibly only 79. LFC were on 25 points with 18 games to go when Dalglish took over in January-a maximum return from those 18 games would have produced a season finishing total of 79.

          4. If you read one of the answers I sent you earlier on I wrote ‘Of course the PL is top priority, you’d be a moron not to believe that……’, so I do agree with Paisley. The comparison with Arsenal is incorrect for two reasons: a) because they have not won a trophy for the past 6 seasons, and b) because Wenger and the Club have a policy to primarily develop players through their youth system. Their philosophy is totally different from all PL top teams, and perhaps Wenger has now realised that he needs to support his young stars with some quality signings.
From a season which started on a disastrous note, Kenny Dalglish remains unbeaten at home, has recorded victories over Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and drew with Arsenal. Liverpool remain the third best performing teams since January after Man Utd and Chelsea and have now climbed to fifth!
Kenny live with the fact that Liverpool will probably play the Europa League next season. Notwithstanding the fact you are against it, the Club will not take your doubts into consideration and exclude themselves from it.

  2. I wonder if all the bitters players will still be banging on about finishing above us, been sick and tired of them the past few weeks.

    1. Tony, a lot of guys on here said, weeks ago, that Liverpool would NOT make fifth, so it’s not surprising with the other side of Liverpool making this their goal for the season.
