Two sides who have made an unbeaten start to the new Premiership season meet on Saturday after the international break with ninth placed Stoke playing host to third placed Liverpool. The Britannia Stadium has been an unhappy hunting ground for Liverpool in recent years, will it be a case of same again on Saturday or will Liverpool’s luck change?
Liverpool have not won at Stoke in the Premiership since Stoke’s promotion, in the last three seasons the results have been 0-0, 1-1 and a 2-0 win for Stoke last season. This, along with Stoke’s strong start to the season that has seen them go seven competitive matches unbeaten, could be the reason why Liverpool are available at very large odds of 11/8 to win the match at the time of writing.
Stoke fans will probably be more than happy to back their team to win the match after a successful start to the season both in terms of results and transfers, Stoke are available at 12/5 but it seems the most likely result and the best bet could be a draw at 12/5. With two out of the three previous meetings here ending all square and both teams so far going unbeaten this season it really does look the stand out bet and a result both teams wouldn’t be too disappointed in as it maintains their strong starts to the season.
What stands out from the previous meetings between the two teams and the starts each team has made to the season is the lack of high scoring games. Anyone backing under 2.5 goals in Stoke v Liverpool would have won in all three league games and it would also have been a winning bet in six out of Stoke’s seven competitive matches this season and two of Liverpool’s three Premiership matches this season. It would be a bit of a surprise therefore if this game is filled with goals and under 2.5 goals could be the bet of the game at 8/11.
If this game is to end a low scoring draw then 0-0 and 1-1 are the correct score to bet on at 9/1 and 6/1 respectively, if either side is going to win then 1-0 could be the most likely outcomes, 1-0 to Liverpool is 7/1 whilst Stoke 1-0 is 10/1. Stoke managed to hold Chelsea to a 0-0 draw on the first weekend of the season and a similarly solid Stoke performance can be expected but Liverpool could have more cutting edge than Chelsea so 1-1 is probably a slightly better bet. That cutting edge may well come from Luis Suarez, he is the favourite to score the first goal at 5/1 with Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt next best at 7/1 and 15/2 respectively.
What are your best bets from this match? Is a draw a decent result or would you be gutted to see Liverpool emerge from this weekend with just one point? Will this be another low scoring game at Stoke or will there be plenty of goals?
