The 24 year old Belgian responded to reports linking him to Newcastle by stating that ‘I do not want to play in an English club to mid-table. Unlike Newcastle, Liverpool meets my criteria’ which is pretty ironic considering we aren’t too far off mid table. This is a great sign of the draw that Liverpool still has over players. Alderwiereld is currently playing at Ajax and is predominately a right footed central defender who can also play on the right. The center back position is certainly the main priority come summer.
Alderweireld’s contract expires in the summer of 2014 and would be available at a cut price of around £8-10million. This is amazing value for such a highly talented and touted player who has drew comparisons to fellow Belgians Vermarlem and Vertoghen. He has also been linked with moves to Arsenal, Everton, Man Utd and Newcastle but his heart seems to be set on a move to Anfield.
The Belgian is the type of defender Rodgers loves, great on the ball, his more of a Agger-esque player who loves to pass it out the defence rather than hoofing it.
Alderweireld offers a lot more than Williams in my opinion and would represent a player with resale value who could become a fixture in the squad for many years to come. Liverpool have been constantly linked with £15million rated Brazilian Dede however talk of his proposed move to Corinthians has heated up meaning Rodgers could lose out.
