With 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying complete and all of the teams set to compete in soccer’s biggest event, a score of Liverpool players find themselves in the mix for roster spots. From Steve Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge wearing the colors for England, to Mamadou Sakho suiting up for a strong French squad, the reds look to have a good showing in Brazil for World Cup 2014.
While many books have yet to release their soccer odds for the big event, fans are already naming their favorites and picks to win the competition and the World Cup title.
The England National Football Team boasts a strong presence of Liverpool FC players, with none more prominent than midfielder Steven Gerrard, captain of both Liverpool and the national team. He’s the national team’s current leader in caps with 108 — two ahead of Ashley Cole and five ahead of Frank Lampard. He also second among national team midfielders with 21 goals, sitting behind Chelsea star Lampard with 29.
Joining Gerrard on the team from Liverpool is Glen Johnson, Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge. It’s worth noting as well that Raheem Sterling earned a recent call up against Montenegro on October 11.
Mamdou Sakho will wear the French colors in the tournament and already has 16 caps at the age of 23.
Kolo Toure helped Ivory Coast to qualify this year, and he’ll be suiting up for the national team at next year’s premiere event.
Liverpool Keeper Simon Mignolet will stand guard for Belgium, while Pepe Reina will look to do the same for strong contender, Spain.
Meanwhile Philippe Coutinho hopes to earn a spot playing for the host nation, Brazil, which would truly be a great honor for the young 21 year old midfielder and proud Liverpool player.
All in all, Liverpool fans should be proud of their players going to the big event, and eager to see how they perform on the big stage in Brazil.
