Football is fickle. And opinions change as often as results.
If Liverpool were bidding such an amount of money I would think we were paying over the odds. But then he has been Chelsea’s player of the season for the last two years and if he were to steer United to the top four it would be considered good business.
I can’t see the future. But what I would say to fellow Liverpool supporters who are worried by United splashing the cash while our own transfer deals look like stalling is ‘wait and see’. If Moyes can get the best out of Mata, and that’s a big if, then they will undoubtedly improve. But the Scottish manager doesn’t usually build his sides around flair players and Mata has struggled to adapt to a similar ethos under Jose Mourinho this season.
Liverpool are still in fourth place and if we can add a couple of decent players in the next seven days that could still be the springboard for success.
In recent years the red half of Merseyside (it’s more than half but let’s not split hairs) have started the season knowing that our team couldn’t win the league. So our outlook became ‘anyone other than United’. But what’s been nice this season is not worrying what they do. Hopefully that can continue.
