The suggestion, which comes via the Daily Express, includes accusations of poor summer recruitment, and poor choice in backroom staff from the Liverpool boss – who led his team to second place in last season’s Premier League.

“Brendan Rodgers’ biggest failure is that he’s not invested in his staff,”Meulensteen told reporters. “He has got there because of his philosophy and I rate him for that.”

The Reds sit seventh after nine games, having won just four and are nine points off top spot. And Meulensteen thinks Rodgers should have added to his back-room staff to increase the club’s Champions League experience to aid the process of fighting on multiple fronts this season.

“He has obviously got people around him who he obviously thinks are the right ones,” he added. “But I think he could have done with someone who has been there, seen it and done it.

“Playing in the Premier League and the Champions League, it’s a different rhythm that requires a different style of training and a different management strategy through the week. You need to know these things.”

Liverpool have won just once in three Champions League games, losing out to Real Madrid and Basel after narrowly beating minnows Ludogorets in the opening game.
