Fabio Borini to Sunderland: Black Cats ready to return for Reds striker…

Sunderland are toying with the idea of going back in for Fabio Borini in January, after failing to convince the player to make the move from Liverpool in the summer.

The Black Cats, who were impressed with the striker during his loan spell with them last season, had a £14m bid for the player accepted prior to the start of the new season, only for Borini to opt to stay and fight for his future on Mersyside.

But with the Italian’s first-team opportunities limited so far this season, boss Poyet is considering another swoop. It is claimed he will hold talks with Stadium of Light chiefs this week and outline his January targets.

The Daily Star believes that any potential offer will be a take it or leave it bid from the Premier League side, who will pursue other targets in the New Year if they are unable to convince the Italian to join them.

Borini knows that in Poyet, he has a manager who rates him highly and will give him regular football. The Sunderland boss has also admitted he is interested in making at least one new signing, saying: “We’ve been watching a certain quantity of players in certain positions for a while.

“Now, it’s time to meet to discuss everything. So, in the next two or three weeks, we’ll start getting in contact with clubs and agents and see where we get to.”
