Liverpool set to miss out on World Cup star signing: why Reds fans should not be concerned

Guillermo Ochoa only moved to Malaga CF in the summer, but has already been linked with a move to Liverpool and Arsenal in January after a failure to break into the Spanish side’s team.

However, the Daily Express claim that despite both the Reds and Gunners being keen to boost their goalkeeping options when the mid-season transfer window opens, the Mexican World Cup star will instead move to Trabzonspor, with the Turkish side having had a €6 million bid accepted.

Simon Mignolet has proven himself a brilliant shot stopper since moving to Anfield, but has been prone to errors; indeed, no player made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League last season than the Belgian.

Mignolet’s technique has also been called into question, given he is not as comfortable on the ball as La Masia graduate Pepe Reina. Still, he has shown signs of improvement in his time at the club, with Rodgers emphasising a desire to pass the ball out from the back rather than hit it long.

Ochoa’s pass completion rate was a mere 56% last season with AJ Ajaccio, and only up to 62% with Mexico at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Given Mignolet has completed 77.4% of his passes in the Premier League this term, he is closer to Rodgers’ ideal than Ochoa.

That’s why it’s hard to envisage the transfer of Guillermo Ochoa to Liverpool – regardless of whether a Trabzonspor move goes ahead or if we are in the market for another shot-stopper.
