Napoli back in for Lucas: Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas remains a target for Napoli…

Italian giants Napoli will make a fresh approach for Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas in the January transfer window – according to reports in the Daily Star.

Napoli have been regularly linked with Lucas throughout 2014, and these latest reports claim that the wantaway midfielder is desperate to seek a reunion with former Reds manager Rafael Benitez.

The 27-year-old is settled on Merseyside, but is frustrated at his lack of game time so far this season. Former boss Benitez is a confirmed fan of Leiva, and believes the holding player can help inspire his team to success this season.

The player’s agent Henrique Coelho fuelled speculation by saying: “Is it possible for Lucas Leiva to leave Liverpool in January? Yes, naturally. Lucas really likes Benitez. After all, the two know each other well.”

Benitez is under pressure at Napoli, though, and much may depend on how results go over the next month. The ex-Anfield coach is keen on a return to England or a national team role so he can spend more time with his family, who still live on Merseyside.

Napoli currently sit third in Serie A, nine points behind leaders Juventus, and six behind second place Roma. They are unbeaten in nine games after losing two of their first three matches, and recently scored a surprise win over Roma.

They are also top of their Europa League group after winning three of their four games. However, the big disappointment came much earlier this year, when they missed out on qualification to the Champions League group stages, losing a qualifier against Athletic Bilbao.
