Steven Gerrard has rubbished reports of a rift with manager Brendan Rodgers…

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has taken to social media website Instagram to rubbish this morning’s media reports of a rift with manager Brendan Rodgers.

Gerrard posted the picture above on his account, along with the caption: “Just to set the record straight, media talk of a fall-out between us two is nonsense.”

Reports in the Daily Mirror explain that Gerrard was forced to make the denial, after being left out of the team on the 16th anniversary of his debut. The Liverpool captain instead came off the bench to help inspire a 1-0 victory over Stoke City, ending a five match winless run.

It was only the second time the 34-year-old has been dropped to the bench this season, with Gerrard having also not started the Champions League game against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last month.

Meanwhile, Rodgers told the BBC that he wasn’t aware of the day’s importance to Gerrard, until his team had been picked. He said: “I wasn’t aware it was 16 years until I walked into the dressing room and saw the programme. I felt quite bad but he’s a wonderful man. He thinks about the team.”
