Mario Balotelli is making a ‘mockery’ of the club, claims former Liverpool star Steve Nicol…

Former Liverpool icon Steve Nicol has claimed that Mario Balotelli is making a ‘mockery’ of the club. The controversial striker has until Friday evening to respond to an FA investigation.

Reports in the Daily Mirror explain that Balotelli posted – then deleted – a potentially racist and anti-Semetic image on Instagram. The £16.5m summer signing is currently sidelined through injury, having struggled to impress on the pitch so far this season.

The Italian is yet to score in the Premier League, despite having spent three months at the club he joined from AC Milan, and Nicol, who made over 300 appearances for the Reds, has admitted he would have preferred his former club to have signed someone else.

Southampton’s Shane Long, who moved to the South Coast from West Brom in the summer, is one of the players the iconic Anfield defender would have preferred instead of the former Manchester City man.

Nicol said: “They spent £16m on Balotelli but I would prefer to have signed someone like Shane Long. He’s someone who will come on the field and throw his guts into a game and give you everything he’s got.

“He might hot have the ability or the CV of Balotelli but the fans would love him. Instead, you’ve got a guy who is not producing on the field and who’s making a mockery of the club off the field.”

Long has scored twice for Southampton this season but only has six starts to his name, compared to Balotelli’s eight.
