Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard wants a top four finish and a trophy this season…

Steven Gerrard insists that Liverpool are still capable of winning a top four finish and a trophy this season, despite their difficult start to the campaign.

He said: “Look, we’re still moving forward, I really believe that. I’m the first to admit it’s been tough this season, it’s been a bit of a roller-coaster. But no-one in the dressing room has lost confidence in the manager. We are all behind him, we all believe in him.

“We aren’t where we want to be in the table and nobody is happy about that, but we’re determined to put it right. It will take time. But I have that belief that we’ll get it right and we will get there.

“We are a strong dressing room with a good manager – it will only be a matter of time before we turn it around. I’ve got confidence it will happen – and hopefully it will start with a victory over Arsenal because that could really kick-start things for us.”

Liverpool sit eleventh in the Premier League table ahead of today’s game with Arsenal, while they have also been knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage. However, the Reds captain remains positive.

“What are our goals for the rest the season? That’s clear. We want top four and a trophy,” he said. “That’s always our bread and butter. After the start we’ve had I think it will be a fantastic achievement if we can get in that top four.

“We’re not happy with our position in the table at the moment. But if we can come through a big game against Arsenal and get a win then that could be the catalyst for us to go on a run of results.

“There are a lot of league games over the Christmas period. So if you can string three or wins together it can get you up there knocking on the door. We’ve got to keep fighting for that because it’s so important to this club. That’s the main aim, no doubt about it.

“And on top of that if we can try and get a cup a long the way that would be a very welcome bonus because this club is about winning trophies.”

Liverpool returned to form with an impressive 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in mid-week, setting up a Capital One Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea.

“A cup would be great and we’re looking forward to the Chelsea game,” said Gerrard. “It’s tough of course. On form they are the best team in the country; but it’s exciting.

“It’s going to be two great games and two great atmospheres. It’s a bonus for us because it’s been a tough season, so it’s nice to have a semi-final to look forward to. But we know our main goal is that top four.”
