Liverpool’s 9 highest goalscoring defenders in history, with Riise & Hyypia

6) Sami Hyypia – 35 goals

Probably Liverpool’s best defender of the Premier League era, Liverpool have struggled to replace the towering Finn ever since he left in 2009. His most famous goal probably came against Juventus on our way to Champions League glory in 2005.

5) Steve Nicol – 46 goals

Nicol’s versatility enabled him to play in a number of positions all over the field, and while he was naturally a defender, his eye for goal was clinical. Nicol won five first division titles, and a European Cup in 1984.

4) Tommy Smith – 48 goals

Smith made over 600 first-team appearances for the Reds, and bagged almost a half-century of goals in that time between 1962 and 1978. Despite his superb Liverpool career, he only won the sole England cap in 1978.
