Brendan Rodgers says Simon Mignolet could reclaim number one spot

Does that mean we’re not targeting a new goalkeeper?

Despite being on the bench for the last four games, Brendan Rodgers has said Simon Mignolet could still reclaim the number one spot.

Mignolet has been under a lot of criticism recently after a handful of sub-par performances and questionable decisions in goal but he was called into action against Burnley yesterday when Brad Jones pulled a thigh muscle after 15 minutes.

The Daily Mirror claim we’re after Petr Cech on loan next month after some unimpressive performances from the Belgian but report that the Boss felt the keeper put in a good shift during our 1-0 win at Turf Moor and he could still yet be number one.

“I thought he did well,” said Rodgers, who also hinted Mignolet would feature for the rest of the Christmas calendar.

“He came for a couple of crosses really well, caught one and punched one, didn’t have a great deal to do, kicking was good.

“He’s worked hard since he’s come out of the team and now he’s come on and kept a clean sheet and that was important for us.”

Let’s not kid ourselves, there were a few shaky moments against Burnley and Mignolet could have made things hard for us with some of his kicking antics, but do you agree with the Boss? Is Mignolet good enough to start between the sticks on a long term basis or would your priority be a new keeper in January?
