Gerrard has the right to listen to rival club offers says Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers insists he’s relaxed about the possibility of Gerrard signing for a rival club.

In news that will delight no Liverpool fans, today marks the day when Steven Gerrard is allowed to sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club if he so wishes.

As our captain is yet to sign a new contract and his current deal runs out at the end of this season, Gerrard could in theory talk to clubs from overseas with an eye to signing on a free transfer in the summer.

Liverpool have reportedly offered Gerrard a new contract but according to the Daily Telegraph, Stevie is weighing up just how many games he can realistically expect to play next season as he’s already sat a number out and began matches on the bench this season.

However, Brendan Rodgers says he’s earned the right to do this considering the sheer number of years of service he’s put into our famous Red shirt.

“I have got a great relationship and communication with Steven so we understand exactly the position,” he said. “I think he has earned that respect if he does [talk to anyone],” said the Boss.

“When I came in here 2½ years ago, everyone talked about whether he could play my type of football and were his legs gone? Arguably he could have been the player of the year last year. He understands my situation of picking the best team and making it fresh as often as we can. He missed out the other night but he will play against Leicester.”

A potential move to New York Red Bulls and teaming up once again with our former manager Gerard Houllier has been touted, but would you really be okay to see our talismanic captain go, or should Gerrard finish his career in front of the Kop?
