The Independent report on a story in the Metro, who in turn report on an article in the Daily Star, who appear to be the original source of the rumour.

That’s a simple illustration of how the rumour mill generates its power, but presuming the story is true, it would be an interesting signing.

Akpom is a talented young player who has been exceptionally prolific at U21 level, but has yet to score a senior goal, and appears very raw still.

In the FA Cup fifth round victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, the 19 year-old showed his potential with a couple of lung-busting runs with the ball, but also his immaturity when it came to decision making, failing to spot team-mates in space on each occasion.

Given he is out of contract in June, Akpom would be something of a risk-free acquisition for us, but the issue would be when he would be likely to play.

We’re already bringing Divock Origi in from Lille OSC this summer, and it’s hard to see both 19 year-olds earning the playing time they want next season – it would likely be one or the other, even if Origi can play wide.

The Daily Telegraph state that Akpom has offers from Borussia Dortmund, Feyenoord and FC Twente – and Arsenal, of course – and those all appear more likely destinations at present..
