Lazar Markovic will not play against Besiktas in Liverpool’s UEFA Europa League last 32 double header – or either leg of any prospective last 16 clash in the competition – after receiving a four game ban from UEFA for his red card against FC Basel.

The suspension is doubly frustrating, for the Serbian winger was incredibly unfortunate to even be sent off in the first place.
Markovic was given a straight red for supposedly striking out at Basel’s Behrang Safari, and the Iranian’s theatrical reaction certainly seemed to harm Markovic’s cause.
Ridiculously, UEFA only allows appeals in the case of mistaken identity, and so our hands were tied in avoiding suspension.
Still, it’s surprising to see that Markovic has been handed the maximum possible sentence – and the 21 year-old seemed as bemused as the rest of us, sharing the below image to Twitter with a simple but effective message.
