The former Spanish youth team international cost the European champions £25m in 2013, but the former Real Sociedad star has struggled to hold down a first-team spot at the Bernabeu, with a number of reports having suggested that he could be available come the end of the season.

According to talkSPORT, Arsenal are leading the chase for the 24-year-old – who has started just three league games so far this season – but Alonso’s tip off could cause Rodgers to make a rival bid.

Alonso, who as an integral part of our Champions League winning side in 2005, played with Illarramendi last season before leaving for Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window, and has tipped the youngster to enjoy an excellent career.

Clearly, no move for the player has been made at this stage, but what do we think Liverpool fans – would he be a good signing ahead of next season?
