In what was a massively experienced Man City team, Liverpool’s young squad, which included seven players 24 years-old or under and whose average age was 23, blew away the Premier League champions.

And the success of our youngsters hints at a quite promising future according to Brendan Rodgers and shows just what the club is working towards.

“I thought the performance was unbelievable when you consider the age of our players and look at the level of players they have – world class players,” said the Boss to Daily Mirror.

“It was a great performance and a really good symbol of how we’ve been working. That’s the exciting thing for me and I said earlier in the season that once they began to settle and understand what’s expected of them it can be an exciting future for the team here.

“We have a lot of young players, and if you track their ages then it’s very exciting. If they all stay together then it can be a real exciting time here at this club.”

Five players were 22 and under against the champions including Emre Can, Lazar Markovic, Alberto Moreno, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho, while the likes of Jordon Ibe, 19, Javier Manquillo, 20 and 22-year-old Jon Flanagan were all missing against City and Divock Origi, 19, and Andre Wisdom, 21, are both out on-loan.

It certainly boasts of frightening potential and an incredible team to come if every player can live up to their billing. Rodgers came under a fair amount of pressure early in the season as a squad featuring many new signings learned to gel with one another, but our manager certainly deserves great praise for the way he has improved so many of the teams.
