Reports in Italy have linked us with the 22-year-old who is said to have attracted interest from a number of clubs in Europe after a number of great displays for Atlanta this season.

If Liverpool were to attempt to sign the Italian we would likely have to contend with Serie A giants Inter and AC Milan but the club will be encouraged by the goalkeeper’s response to speculation linking him to Anfield.

“Liverpool are definitely a great club. We are talking about one of the top clubs in the world,” he told Italian news source L’Eco di Bergamo, via Sky Sports.

“However, I am happy to be here. This is my first year as a starter and I recently signed a new contract with Atalanta.

“My life has changed in a few months.”

Whilst it’s clear we need to buy a goalkeeper given the almost certain exit of Brad Jones in the summer when his contract expires, it’s unclear just what kind of shot stopper we’ll be targeting.

Given the renaissance of Simon Mignolet in between the sticks of late, you wouldn’t be shocked if we targeted a more junior keeper rather than direct competition from the Belgian – though there’s always a chance he could return to his early season wobbles.

However, if Mignolet were to remain first choice it would likely be a hard sell to bring Sportiello to Merseyside, as he became Atlanta’s first-choice just this season.
