British tabloid picks Liverpool’s team of the season – no Emre Can or Steven Gerrard?!

Erm… really?! Daily Mirror leaves Emre Can, Alberto Moreno and Steven Gerrard on the sidelines…

The Daily Mirror claim to have unearthed the ‘statistically best’ Liverpool team so far this season, using numbers from Opta and Whoscored.com. Needless to say, we were NOT impressed!

Simon Mignolet unsurprisingly starts in goal, behind a back three of Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho. This means there’s no place for 21-year-old German starlet Emre Can – arguably the Reds’ best defender so far this term – whose inclusion as part of Brendan Rodgers’ back three has been an overwhelming success.

The central midfield partnership includes Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva. As a result, captain Steven Gerrard will have to make do with a place on the bench, despite him being our joint top scorer this term with ten.

Out wide is Adam Lallana – despite him never having played as a wing-back this season – and Jordon Ibe, who despite his success has only played a handful of games. This again means Alberto Moreno, arguably the pick of our summer signings, is not included.

Thankfully, it’s hard to debate the front trio – with Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho playing behind Daniel Sturridge – seemingly they had to get at least something right!

If there’s one thing we’ve definitely learned from this, it’s that numbers never tell the whole story…
