Surprising reason behind Sakho’s impressive form…

Mamadou Sakho has revealed that learning English has helped him adapt to life at Liverpool and rediscover the form that saw the club splash £18 million on him in 2013.

A series of injuries and a number of bad performances have continued to set Sakho back during his time at the club and he made just 24 appearances in his first season last year.

It looked like the trend was set to continue at the beginning of this season and was compounded when Sakho suffered a thigh injury in December.

However, since his return to the Liverpool XI he’s looked like the missing cog of Brendan Rodgers’ defensive master plan with the side more balanced and secure when he has been selected.

But what is it that’s suddenly made it all click, Sakho revealed all in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe, via Daily Star.

“Do I finally feel happy at Liverpool? Yes, I feel good. The most difficult thing has been the language,” he said.

“I am a man of strong character so when I can’t express myself I am always frustrated, and if I cannot make myself understood it is even worse.

“Some people said that I should be speaking French and that would allow me to release the tension a bit, except that when I spoke in French on the pitch nobody understood what I was saying.

“I said to myself: ‘This is useless – I really must learn’. It took time but now it is very good.”

His current delight at the club is a world away from his mindset in September when left out of the squad for the Merseyside Derby, a slight which saw him storm out of Anfield before kick-off.

The Frenchman was crucial to the Reds unbeaten record since the 3-0 defeat to Man United in December that incredibly ran for almost three months until last weekend.

We can only hope his love of living on Merseyside continues if it makes him play so well.
