Pepe Reina says Steven Gerrard should not be blamed for Man United red card

Leave him alone! Pepe Reina is quick to point out Gerrard’s many great moments for Liverpool…

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has slammed criticism of Reds captain Steven Gerrard, who he claims can still leave the club on a high at the end of the season, despite his potentially costly red card last weekend.

Gerrard was dismissed after less than a minute against Manchester United, having previously replaced Adam Lallana at half-time. The Reds would lose the game 2-1, and now sit five points behind the Red Devils in fourth place.

Reina has backed Gerrard to respond well upon his return to the team next month, and lead the club to the FA Cup final – a match which would be our iconic skipper’s last for the club, prior to his move to LA Galaxy.

The No. 8 will miss our next three games – against Arsenal and Newcastle United in the Premier League, as well as an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers – and will no doubt be hoping that we’re still in contention in both competitions when he returns.

Bayern Munich stopper Reina, who returns to Anfield this weekend for a charity match, was quoted by the Daily Star as he backed Gerrard to bounce back.

He said: “He made a mistake in a big game. If anyone feels these kinds of games deeply on his heart, it’s Stevie.

“He would have liked to say goodbye in a Man United game in a different way, but he’s still got a few games and hopefully they can finish at Wembley in a cup final and it won’t be too bad.

“Last year they were close to winning the title and everyone was waiting for this year to be like the last. They spent a lot of money and everyone was expecting more.

“The first part of the season wasn’t great, but they’ve had a better second half and hopefully they can make it.”
