Gerrard starts alongside Xabi Alonso and Kevin Nolan in the centre of midfield, although the biggest surprise comes up front – where Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres are both able to only make the bench.

Liverpool academy prospect Jerome Sinclair starts up front instead, where he will be partnered by former Arsenal and Barcelona man Thierry Henry.

Chelsea’s John Terry starts alongside Gerrard’s cousin Anthony, now with Oldham Athletic, in central defence.

On the opposite side, it’s Mario Balotelli and Didier Drogba who make-up an intriguing strike partnership for Carragher’s men, with Craig Bellamy sitting on the bench.

Carragher is partnered at the back by Martin Kelly, while Jon Flanagan returns from injury in a starting role. Harry Kewell also gets the nod in midfield.
