Liverpool have been handed a major transfer boost in their pursuit of a top talent…

Marcel van der Kraan, a prominent and respected Dutch football expert working for Telesport, has hinted that Liverpool are strong contenders for promising Dutch international Memphis Depay, who has been widely tipped for a summer move to Manchester United.

van der Kraan was quizzed by talkSPORT this morning, and was asked specifically about the 21-year-old winger, who was among the stars of last summer’s World Cup, helping the Netherlands finish third.

He told the radio station: “People think Louis van Gaal will take him, but the fact that Liverpool scouts are in Eindhoven almost every week to watch the player signals to me that Liverpool are a strong contender for the boy.”

United boss Louis van Gaal, who managed Depay at international level, is thought to be keen on recruiting the £20m-rated PSV Eindhoven star ahead of the start of next season, but they could yet be pipped by us, due to our incessant scouting of the prodigy.

Depay has scored 23 goals in 34 games so far this season, taking his overall tally to 45 in 118 for his club side. He scored twice in Brazil last summer – against Australia and Chile – and now has 13 international caps.

Brendan Rodgers has traditionally aimed to sign prolific young talent with bags of potential, and Depay certainly fits that bill. We already have Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Coutinho – all capable of playing the attacking midfield roles, but Depay would bolster an already impressive front-line.

Let’s hope that Van der Kraan knows what he’s talking about!
