We’re now just four points behind Manchester City…

Joe Allen believes Liverpool are back on track after a cagey 2-0 win over Newcastle at Anfield.

The victory against the Magpies leaves us just four points off Manchester City in fourth place and paints a far rosier pictures than that see in recent weeks.

“[The win is] brilliant for our confidence,” Allen said after the win at Anfield last night, according to Mirror Online.

“We can’t wait. To have an occasion at Wembley is great, but we appreciate that it’s only the semi-final and that there’s a lot of work to be done.

“With tonight’s win and performance, we can got there confident that we can get ourselves through and get back there for another game in the final.

“When you come off the back of two defeats and two disappointing performances, I think the result is probably more important than the performance.

“It was another clean sheet and three points – you can’t ask for much more than that.”

After consecutive defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal it looked as if our top-four ambitions were over in regards to this season.

However, the almost piece-by-piece collapse of Manchester City, whilst being delightfully amusing, has also reopened the door to a return to the Champions League for us next season.

This really couldn’t have come at a better time with the FA Cup quarterfinal win over Blackburn and the Premier League victory over Newcastle hopefully confirming that we’re on the comeback to top form after a recent dip.

A win at the weekend will not only give us a big chance to win a first major trophy since 2012 but will continue this great resurgence and prove to be the driving force in a last push to qualify for Europe.
