As you’ll see in the clip from Sky Sports below, between August 2015 and Mrch 2015, over 8,000 abusive tweets were sent to our Italian forward, and shockingly over half of those had racial connotations.
Daniel Sturridge is also a regular victim of internet abuse, with 60% of tweets focussed on sexual orientation.
News like this leaves a sour taste in your mouth, and little else – but proves that football’s battle with discrimination is going to be a long and hard fought one.
