Liverpool’s final chance of silverware this season comes to an end at Wembley…

It’s Aston Villa who will meet Arsenal in the FA Cup final next month, after goals from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph were enough to ensure that we’ll end this season empty handed.

It was a desperately disappointing day for the Reds, for whom proceedings started so promisingly with a goal from Philippe Coutinho. You can watch all of the game’s key moments in the clips below.

It was Villa who started the stronger and it needed an excellent touch from Simon Mignolet to deny Charles N’Zogbia with the first real chance of the game:

Crucially, an injury to Nathan Baker saw the defender limp out of the game mid-way through the first-half. He was replaced by Jores Okore…

And Okore clearly wasn’t awake for this one, as Coutinho latched on to Raheem Sterling’s pass and slotted past Shay Given…

However, the lead lasted just six minutes. Christian Benteke, so often the scourge of Liverpool, scoring the leveller.

Soon after the break, Villa had the lead, Fabian Delph getting the second after more poor defending from the Reds.

Mario Balotelli, who was introduced at the break, was relieved that the offside flag came up after he squandered this chance to level the scores.

As the Reds pushed forward, the threat of a Villa counter began to grow. It needed a fine saving tackle from Alberto Moreno to deny Benteke a third.

Steven Gerrard could not produce any free-kick magic, with his chance going straight at the goalkeeper…

While Dejan Lovren was equally wasteful, heading over from a corner.

Gerrard came the closest to a second Liverpool goal, but his header was cleared off the line.

Mario Balotelli did find the net but was again, albeit incorrectly, ruled offside to complete the heartbreak for the Reds.
