Depay is one of the hottest properties across the continent currently, having guided PSV Eindhoven to their first Eredivisie title in seven years. The winger has 21 goals, and is on course to win the league’s golden boot.

According to the Liverpool Echo, we are interested in the exciting youngster, and could make a bid of £20m for the 21-year-old. However, we are facing an uphill battle to grab his signature as Louis van Gaal worked with Depay whilst with the Netherlands national side, and United currently look a much safer bet for Champions League football next season. Therefore, Kuyt – who will be returning to the Dutch top flight with Feyenoord in the summer – has felt obliged to step in on our behalf.

The 34-year-old, who made over 200 league appearances for us, believes that if Depay wants to experience regular first-team football, there is only one option he can make.

“I look through red glasses because I played six years for Liverpool. Only when Memphis does that will he realise just how big Liverpool are.

“Of course it would be an advantage at Manchester United because he knows the manager. On the other hand it is important at his age that he plays every week. That’s the only way he can develop,” he added.
