Garcia struck after just four minutes, with the goal given despite the ball being hooked clear off the line by William Gallas. Despite the controversy of a moment that has gone down in both club’s folklore, it was a deserved victory for the Reds, who kept Chelsea’s all-star strikeforce at bay for 180 minutes of football.
And the rest, as they say, is history – goals from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso helping us come from three behind against Milan, before Jerzy Dudek’s penalty heroics won us the trophy.
Garcia would go on to play 122 games for Liverpool, scoring 31 goals. He joined Atletico Madrid in 2007 before a succession of moves to smaller clubs in his later years. He currently plays for Atletico Kolkata in India.
