Brad Jones livid with Liverpool as Reds ‘fail to honour’ contract agreement

Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones has been left fuming after being told that he won’t be offered a new deal to stay with the club beyond the end of the season, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

This contradicts with previous reports (via the Liverpool Echo), where Brendan Rodgers appeared to confirm that Jones was close to signing an extension. Rodgers told the Echo that ‘there had been discussions’, although he refused to be drawn on whether anything more concrete had been agreed.

Now it appears as if Jones will indeed be leaving Anfield. The Mail claim that the Australian has been angered by the fact that an offer was seemingly withdrawn, with Rodgers back-tracking over his initial assurances to the player.

Jones had been told that, due to the positive influence he held within the dressing room, he would be allowed to remain with the club for another 12 months in a back-up role to Simon Mignolet; but he now expects to leave, says the report…

The Metro believes that this means Fiorentina’s out of contract stopper Neto will now be free to join Liverpool during the summer transfer window. His contract is also due to expire and he’ll be a free agent at the end of next month.

Jones has made 25 appearances during four years at Liverpool. He enjoyed a brief run in the first-team back in December, after Mignolet was dropped by Rodgers following a run of poor form. However, the 33-year-old them limped out of our game with Burnley on Boxing Day due to injury and hasn’t featured since.

We’re not sure that a player with Jones’s limited ability should be offered a contract for purely dressing room reasons, but feel sorry for him if he was indeed made promises which haven’t been fulfilled.
