The Belgian has bounced back from a difficult start to the campaign – which eventually saw him dropped for a few games in December – and is now the current leader for the Premier League’s Golden Glove. While he was unable to add to his total of 14 clean sheets at the weekend, he made a series of impressive saves in the draw against Chelsea, including an excellent stop from a vicious shot from Willian in the second-half.

His main competition for the award was arguably Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian magician has had an excellent year, building upon the success of the back end of the last campaign, and has established himself as one of the best attacking players in the top flight.

Coutinho’s omission highlights how important the former Sunderland stopper has been for us. And the Liverpool Echo report that upon receiving the award, he credited the club for bringing him through the tough spell before Christmas.

“Sometimes it can be a lonely place being a keeper but at this club there are always a lot of people supporting you,” he explained.

The 27-year-old is hoping that he will be able to carry the consistency he has found this calendar year forward into next season.

“What I’ve learned this season going forward is that when you get criticism and praise you need to deal with it the same way,” he added.

“The only thing you can do is keep your head down, work hard and show on the pitch what you can do,” he explained.
