Finding the back of the net has been our main concern this campaign, and is the main reason that we will not be playing in next season’s Champions League. We’ve lost Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who produced 52 league goals between them last season, and have replaced them with the likes of Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert. Neither of which have been prolific by any means.

The 27-year-old Spaniard – who made 14 Premier League appearances without finding the back of the net during his time at Anfield – is currently on loan at La Liga side Sevilla, and according to the Daily Express, will probably be joining the club on a permanent deal in the summer.

But, he has surprisingly claimed that without Suarez, who moved to Barcelona, and Sturridge, who has missed much of the season through injury, he could have come to Brendan Rodgers’ rescue.

“I think that if I’d been at Liverpool this year I would have played a lot more games, with Sturridge’s injury, and Suarez not being there,” he said.

“I might have got the playing time I did not get last year,” he added.

His record in Spain hardly suggests that he was likely to be the kind of marksman that would have taken us into the title picture. He has made four starts, with another 11 appearances coming from the bench, but has bagged just two goals in the top flight.
